Disposition of video alerts and integration of a mobile device into a local service domain

Abstract

A handset or other end device in a local service domain receives video service notifications. The video service notifications can provide information to a user of the end device about a video service (e.g., a television program or a movie) available within a local network. The video service notification can include a request for a response to the notification, with the request having a corresponding URI or other type of link to cause a desired action (e.g., to commence recording or playing content associated with a particular video service). A mobile device configurable for direct communication in a wide area wireless network can join a local service domain and receive services through a gateway of that local service domain.

15 claims: 6 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
A method comprising:receiving telephony data at a handset end device in a local network from a gateway within the local network;outputting audio information from the handset end device based on the received telephony data;receiving video service notification data at the handset end device;and presenting video service notifications at the handset end device based on the received video service notification data, each of the video service notifications providing information to a user of the handset end device about a video service available through a second end device within the local network.
  2. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein at least one of the received notifications includes a request for a user response regarding a specified video service, and further comprising:receiving a user response to the request at the handset end device;and communicating response data from the handset end device based on the received user response.
  3. 5
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the second end device is a set top terminal, wherein a first of the presented video service notifications corresponds to received first video service notification data and provides information to a user of the handset end device about a first video service available through the terminal, and further comprising the following steps occurring prior to receipt of the first video service notification data at the handset end device:detecting at the terminal a predefined trigger event associated with the first video service;sending a first communication from the terminal to a video head end server as a result of detecting the predefined trigger event;receiving a second communication at a video notification server from the video head end server as a result of the first communication;sending a third communication from the video notification server to the gateway as a result of the second communication;and sending the first video service notification data from the gateway to the handset end device as a result of the third communication.
  4. 7
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the second end device is a set top terminal, wherein a first of the presented video service notifications corresponds to received first video service notification data and provides information to a user of the handset end device about a first video service available through the terminal, and further comprising the following steps occurring prior to receipt of the first video service notification data at the handset end device:detecting a predefined trigger event associated with the first video service at a video notification server;sending a first communication from the video notification server to the gateway as a result of detecting the trigger event;and sending the first video service notification from the gateway to the handset end device as a result of the first communication.
  5. 9
An apparatus comprising:a handset end device, the handset end device including a transceiver, memory, and at least one processor in communication with the transceiver and memory and configured to control operations of the handset end device so as to cause the handset end device to perform steps of a method according to any of claims 1 to 8.
  6. 12
A method comprising:establishing a local wireless link between a mobile device and a gateway, wherein the mobile device is configurable to directly communicate in a wide area wireless network without communicating through the gateway, and wherein the gateway provides multiple services in a local service domain to a plurality of end devices, at least one device of the plurality not able to directly communicate in a wide area wireless network;receiving input on the mobile device regarding a user profile to be associated with the mobile device in the local service domain, the user profile including an identity for an associated user in each of the multiple services and including settings controlling the manner in which at least some of the multiple services are provided;and receiving at least some of the multiple services via the gateway at the mobile device, as an end device within the local service domain, in accordance with the user profile.
  7. 15
The method of any of claims 12 to 14, further comprising:receiving, at one of the gateway or an application server, a request for location information regarding the mobile device;and in response to the received request, forwarding location information regarding the mobile device.
