  1. 1
A method for metering real-time streaming media for commercial purposes, the method comprising:▪ receiving a request for a real-time media stream from a client computer;▪ forwarding from a media server to the client computer a continuous sequence of individual pieces of information that correspond to a real-time media stream having a predetermined schedule of programming, wherein the forwarding is via unicast, multicast and/or broadcast;▪ detecting a termination of the forwarding;▪ after the termination, determining information for establishing an extent of the real-time media stream that was forwarded to the client computer, wherein the extent of the real-time media stream that was forwarded to the client is less than the entire real-time media stream;and ▪ logging the information for commercial purposes.
  2. 5
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the forwarding is via the Internet, a packet switched network, a private data network, a satellite network, and/or a cable TV network.
  3. 6
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising, before the forwarding, authenticating the client computer.
  4. 7
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising monitoring the status of the client computer.
  5. 9
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the termination is caused by the operational status of the client computer.
  6. 10
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the determining further comprises ascertaining a duration of the stream forwarded to the client computer.
  7. 11
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising, before the forwarding, compressing the stream.
  8. 12
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising decompressing the stream at the client computer.
  9. 13
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising generating an audio output and/or a visual display at the client computer from the sequence of individual pieces of information received by the client computer.
  10. 14
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising:▪ storing at the client computer a first sequence of individual pieces of information forwarded to the client computer at a first time, and ▪ at a later time, inserting at the client computer the first sequence of individual pieces of information into a second sequence of individual pieces of information forwarded to the client computer.
  11. 15
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the media comprises audio and/or video.
  12. 16
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the media server is instructed to terminate the forwarding of the real-time media stream to the client computer.
  13. 17
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising, before the forwarding, receiving a request for the real-time media stream from the client computer.
  14. 18
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the media server is configured to forward a copy of the sequence of individual pieces of information to more than one client computer.
  15. 20
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising controlling the forwarding of the sequence of individual pieces of information in response to selection signals received from the users.
  16. 21
The method of any of claims 1-4, wherein the sequence of individual pieces of information is configured to be forwarded by a plurality of servers configured to be scalable so that any number of client computers can receive the sequence of individual pieces of information.
  17. 22
The method of any of claims 1-4, further aggregating the data in an audit log over a predetermined time period.
  18. 23
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising providing a software application configured to be loaded onto a client computer, wherein the software application contains instructions for generating a user interface.
  19. 32
The method of any of claims 1-31, comprising:▪ receiving, at the media server, a request for delivery of the real-time media stream to the client computer, wherein the request includes a security token that indicates that the client computer has been authorized, by a server that is different from the media server, to receive the real-time media stream;and ▪ wherein the sequence of individual pieces of information that corresponds to the real-time media stream is forwarded in response to receiving the request.
  20. 33
The method of any of claims 1-32, comprising, forwarding the sequence of individual pieces of information that correspond to the real-time media stream with the predetermined schedule of programming from the media server to a plurality of clients.
  21. 34
The method of any of claims 1-33, wherein:▪ the media server is an intermediate server that receives the sequence of individual pieces of media information from a source that is separate and distinct from the media server;and ▪ one or more individual pieces of media information are received from the source by the media server while the media server is forwarding the sequence of individual pieces of media information to the client computer.
  22. 35
The method of any of claims 1-34, wherein the termination is detected while the real-time media stream is being forwarded form the media server to the client computer.
  23. 36
The method of any of claims 1-35, wherein the real-time media stream corresponds to a channel having the predetermined schedule of programming.
  24. 37
A system for metering real-time streaming media for commercial purposes, comprising one or more servers, the one or more servers comprising:one or more processors;memory;and means for performing any of the methods of claims 1-36.
  25. 38
A computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by one or more servers cause the one or more servers to perform any of the methods of claims 1-36.
