Surgical instrument and loading Unit for use Therewith

Abstract

A surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a handle assembly, a drive assembly, an endoscopic portion, a pair of jaw members, a dynamic clamping member (606), and a tissue stop (700). The drive assembly is disposed in mechanical cooperation with a movable handle of the handle assembly. The endoscopic portion defines a first longitudinal axis. The jaw members are each longitudinally curved with respect to the longitudinal axis. The dynamic clamping member (606) is disposed in mechanical cooperation with a distal portion of the drive assembly and includes an upper beam, a lower beam, and a vertical beam having a cutting edge on a distal portion thereof. At least a portion of the dynamic clamping member (606) is longitudinally curved with respect to the longitudinal axis. The tissue stop (700) is disposed adjacent a distal portion of the first jaw member and configured to impede tissue from distally escaping the jaw members.

  1. 1
A surgical instrument for surgically joining tissue comprising:a handle assembly including a movable handle;a drive assembly disposed in mechanical cooperation with the movable handle;an endoscopic portion extending distally from the handle assembly and defining a first longitudinal axis;a pair of jaw members disposed adjacent a distal end of the endoscopic portion and extending generally distally therefrom, each of the jaw members being curved with respect to the longitudinal axis, at least one of the jaw members being movable with respect to the other between an open position and an approximated position for engaging body tissue therebetween, the pair of jaw members including a first jaw member and a second jaw member;an asymmetrical dynamic clamping member disposed in mechanical cooperation with a distal portion of the drive assembly, wherein the dynamic clamping member is advanced distally through at least a portion of the length of the jaw members in response to at least a partial actuation of the movable handle, the dynamic clamping member including an upper beam, a lower beam, and a vertical portion, the vertical portion connecting the upper beam and the lower beam and including a cutting edge;and a tissue stop disposed adjacent a distal portion of the first jaw member and configured to impede tissue from escaping the jaw members.
  2. 2
The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein a portion of the dynamic clamping member s curved with respect to the longitudinal axis.
  3. 3
The surgical instrument of Claim 2, wherein the vertical portion of the dynamic clamping member is curved with respect to the longitudinal axis.
  4. 4
The surgical instrument of Claim 2, wherein each of the upper beam and the lower beam of the dynamic clamping member has a polygonal shape.
  5. 5
The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein the dynamic clamping member is asymmetrical about a vertical plane extending through the vertical portion.
  6. 6
The surgical instrument of Claim 1, wherein the dynamic clamping member is asymmetrical about a horizontal plane extending through the vertical portion.
  7. 7
The surgical instrument of any preceding claim, wherein the tissue stop is movable from a first position wherein the tissue stop is disposed substantially between the jaw members, and a second position wherein the tissue stop is disposed substantially within the first jaw member.
  8. 8
The surgical instrument of Claim 7, wherein the tissue stop is biased towards its first position via a biasing member.
  9. 9
The surgical instrument of Claim 7 or Claim 8, wherein approximation of the jaw members causes the tissue stop to move from its first position towards it second position.
  10. 10
The surgical instrument of any preceding claim, wherein the tissue stop includes a stopping portion disposed adjacent a proximal portion thereof, the stopping portion being disposed at an oblique angle with respect to a tissue contacting surface of the first jaw member when the jaw members are in the open position.
  11. 11
The surgical instrument of Claim 8, wherein the tissue stop includes at least one finger thereon, the at least one finger extends distally from a proximal portion of the tissue stop and is configured to engage a lip of the first jaw member to limit the amount of movement imparted by the biasing member.
  12. 12
The surgical instrument of any preceding claim, wherein the tissue stop defines a knife channel for receiving the cutting edge.
  13. 13
The surgical instrument of Claim 12, wherein the cutting edge faces off center with respect to an axis through the clamping member.
  14. 14
The surgical instrument of any preceding claim, wherein the lower beam is wider than upper beam of the dynamic clamping member.
  15. 15
The surgical instrument of any preceding claim, further comprising a protrusion extending from a proximal surface of the dynamic clamping member.
