Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention relate to methods and systems for estimating a pixel prediction mode to be used in a video encoding or decoding process, for communicating pixel prediction modes between video encoders and decoders, and for ordering pixel intra-prediction modes.

    A method for estimating an intra-prediction mode of pixels in encoding processing or decoding processing of a digital video comprising:an intra-prediction step of predicting a pixel value along a specified direction;andan estimating step of estimating a prediction mode for a target block to be predicted;whereinthe intra-prediction step uses at leasta Diagonal Down/Left prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the left at approximately a 45 degree angle from the horizontal;a Diagonal Down/Right prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 45 degree angle from the horizontal;a Vertical Right prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 67.5 degree angle from the horizontal;anda Horizontal Down prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 22.5 degree angle from the horizontal;the prediction modes are numbered with increasingly large numbers, in order of the Diagonal Down/Left prediction mode, a Diagonal Down/Right prediction mode, a Vertical Right prediction mode, and a Horizontal Down prediction mode, andthe estimating step estimates a prediction mode of a lower mode number as the prediction mode for the target block to be predicted among a prediction mode of a block located adjacent to and above the target block to be predicted and a prediction mode of a block located adjacent to the left side of the target block to be predicted.

    A system for estimating an intra-prediction mode of pixels in encoding processing or decoding processing of a digital video comprising:an intra-prediction means of predicting a pixel value along a specified direction;andan estimating means of estimating a prediction mode for a target block to be predicted;whereinthe intra-prediction means uses, as prediction modes, at least a Diagonal Down/Left prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the left at approximately a 45 degree angle from the horizontal;a Diagonal Down/Right prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 45 degree angle from the horizontal;a Vertical Right prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 67.5 degree angle from the horizontal;anda Horizontal Down prediction mode using the specified direction being diagonally downward to the right at approximately a 22.5 degree angle from the horizontal;the prediction modes are numbered with increasingly large numbers, in order of the Diagonal Down/Left prediction mode, a Diagonal Down/Right prediction mode, a Vertical Right prediction mode, and a Horizontal Down prediction mode, andthe estimating means estimates a prediction mode of a lower mode number as the prediction mode for the target block to be predicted among a prediction mode of a block located adjacent to and above the target block to be predicted and a prediction mode of a block located adjacent to the left side of the target block to be predicted.
