System and method of aspirating and dispensing reagent

Abstract

Aspirating and dispensing of reagents is accomplished using a probe (119) having an outlet (144) connected via tubing (142) to a syringue pump. The probe (119) has an o-ring (134) for sealing against a vial insert (150) coupled to a dip tube (156) in the reagent vial during aspiration. The probe (119) is then moved to a dispense and washing station that seals against the o-ring (134), and the reagent is dispensed and the probe washed.

23 claims: 4 independent, 19 dependent

  1. 1
Aspirating reagent device comprising:a probe (119) having at one end a shaped surface with a hole (144), said shaped surface being hemispherical;tubing (142) connected to the hole (144) of the probe (119);anda vial insert (132) having a shaped upper surface (150), the shaped upper surface (150) being funnel-like and having a hole, and wherein a funnel-like cavity (152) is formed between the shaped surface of the probe (119) and the upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132) when at least a portion of the shaped surface of the probe (119) contacts the funnel-like surface (150) of the vial insert (132).
  2. 11
Aspirating reagent device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein at least a portion of the vial insert (132) is composed of a pliable material.
  3. 12
Reagent aspirate system comprising:a probe (119) having at one end a hemispherically shaped surface with a hole (144);tubing (142) connected to the hole (144) of the probe (119);means for moving fluid within the tubing (142);reagent vial (116) having an opening;vial insert (132) abutting the opening of the reagent vial (116), the vial insert (132) having a shaped upper surface (150), wherein engagement of the probe (119) with the vial insert (132) forms a seal, by mating of at least a part of the hemispherically shaped surface of the probe (119) with the shaped upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132);and means for moving the probe (119) to engage the vial insert (132).
  4. 17
Method of aspirating reagent from a reagent vial (116) comprising the steps of:providing a probe (119) having a lower surface, a vial insert (132) with an upper surface (150) and a reagent vial (116) with an opening wherein the vial insert (132) is placed in the opening, wherein the lower surface of the probe (119) is hemispherically shaped and the upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132) is funnel-like and has a hole;engaging the lower surface of the probe (119) with the upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132) to form a seal between at least a portion of the lower surface of the probe (119) with at least a portion of the upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132), wherein the probe (119) does not contact the hole of the vial insert (132);withdrawing reagent from the reagent vial (116);anddisengaging the lower surface of the probe (119) from the upper surface (150) of the vial insert (132).
