Fluid delivery system with multi-dose fluid source

Abstract

A fluid delivery system (400A) is generally directed to allowing fluid sources or other fluid delivery components to be reused with multiple fluid targets (318), and includes at least one fluid source (314) fluidly interconnectable with at least one sterilization zone (316) and at least one fluid target (318). This sterilization zone (316) could include one or more sterilization systems that attempt to neutralize contaminants entering the fluid delivery system (400A) by a backflow from the fluid target (318). One such sterilization system (500A-D) includes a container (502a-d) and a flush system (520) for sterilizing the container (502a-d) between uses. Another sterilization system (600) includes a flowpath (604) exposed to an output of an energy source (602) capable of destroying contaminants. Yet another sterilization system could include a sterilizing substance (710) that engages and moves along an interior surface (705) of a housing (704) to treat contamination thereon.

17 claims: 15 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A fluid delivery system (400A), comprising:a fluid reservoir (302);a first flowpath (307) extending from said fluid reservoir to a fluid target (318);an injector (306) fluidly interconnected with said first flowpath, wherein said first flowpath comprises first and second conduit sections (308, 309) that are detachably interconnected, wherein said first conduit section (308) extends from said second conduit section to said fluid target (318) and is disposable, and wherein said second conduit section (309) is reusable for multiple fluid delivery procedures;and an energy source (602), wherein at least part of said first conduit section (308) is exposed to an output of said energy source, and which is operable to reduce a potential of contaminants migrating from said fluid target back to said fluid reservoir and said injector.
  2. 3
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-2, wherein said fluid reservoir (302) comprises a quantity of fluid for accommodating multiple fluid delivery procedures.
  3. 4
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-3, wherein said first flowpath (307) comprises at least one conduit (308, 309).
  4. 5
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-4, wherein said injector (306) comprises a power injector.
  5. 6
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-4, wherein said injector (306) comprises a hand-activated syringe.
  6. 7
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-6, wherein said energy source (602) comprises at least one heater.
  7. 8
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-6, wherein said energy source (602) comprises a radiation source.
  8. 9
The fluid delivery system of any one of claims 1-8, wherein at least about 13 centimeters of said first flowpath (307) is exposed to said output from said energy source (602).
  9. 10
A method for delivering fluid stored in a fluid reservoir, comprising the steps of:executing a first discharging step comprising discharging at least some of said fluid from said fluid reservoir;delivering a first fluid dose to a first fluid target through a flowpath, wherein said fluid from said first discharging step comprises said first fluid dose, and wherein said flowpath extends from said fluid reservoir to said first fluid target;exposing at least a portion of said flowpath to an energy source output;disconnecting said first fluid target from said fluid reservoir;fluidly connecting a second fluid target with said fluid reservoir via said flowpath;executing a second discharging step comprising discharging at least some of said fluid from said fluid reservoir, wherein said second discharging step is executed after said exposing step;and delivering a second fluid dose to said second fluid target, wherein said fluid from said second discharging step comprises said second fluid dose.
  10. 12
The method of any one of claims 10-11, wherein each said delivering step comprises using a power injector.
  11. 13
The method of any one of claims 10-11, wherein each said delivering step comprises manually operating a syringe.
  12. 14
The method of any one of claims 10-13, wherein said exposing step comprises heating said at least a portion of said flowpath.
  13. 15
The method of any one of claims 10-13, wherein said exposing step comprises heating said at least a portion of said flowpath to a temperature of at least about 40°C.
  14. 16
The method of any one of claims 10-13, wherein said exposing step comprises radiating said at least a portion of said flowpath.
  15. 17
The method of any one of claims 10-16, wherein said exposing step is executed after said delivering said first dose step.
