A process for converting a carbonaceous material to a Fischer-Tropsch product, the carbonaceous material being selected from biomass, solid-waste, or a mixture thereof, the process comprising:(A) gasifying the carbonaceous material in a gasifier at a temperature of at least 700°C to form synthesis gas, the synthesis gas flowing out of the gasifier comprising CO, H 2 , water, CO 2 , particulate solids, and contaminants;removing water, CO 2 , particulate solids and contaminants from the synthesis gas;cooling the synthesis gas in one or more heat exchangers prior to step (B);adding an additional amount of H 2 to the synthesis gas prior to step (B) to give synthesis gas having a molar ratio of H 2 to CO in the range from 1.5 to 2.5;and (B) flowing the synthesis gas in a microchannel reactor in contact with a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst to convert the synthesis gas to the Fischer-Tropsch product.
