EP2265080A1

Subsequent set-up of circuit-switched and packet-switched connections

Abstract

An apparatus and method for providing enhanced services is disclosed. The apparatus is configured to support parallel connections of a first and a second type with another terminal (2) as a single logical communication arrangement, the apparatus being configured to establish a first connection of the first type with the other terminal (2) using an address of the first type of the other terminal (2). It can be determined, during the established first connection, that a parallel connection of the second type is to be used in providing an enhanced service. A second connection of the second type can then be established with the other terminal (2) using an address of the second type of the other terminal, the address of the first type being different from the address of the second type.

  1. 1
An apparatus, configured to:support parallel connections of a first and a second type with another terminal (2) as a single logical communication arrangement, the apparatus being configured to establish a first connection of the first type with the other terminal (2) using an address of the first type of the other terminal (2), determine during the established first connection that a parallel connection of the second type is to be used in providing an enhanced service, and establish, during the established first connection, a second connection of the second type with the other terminal (2) using an address of the second type of the other terminal, the address of the first type being different from the address of the second type.
  2. 5
An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the address of the other terminal is an internet protocol address.
  3. 6
An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the address of the second type is a packet-switched address, the apparatus being configured to receive information about the packed-switched address of the other terminal by means of a packet-switched connection.
  4. 8
An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the apparatus is configured to determine that parallel connections of the first type and of the second type are supported.
  5. 9
An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the apparatus is configured to control the establishment of the connection of the second type transparently from the user.
  6. 10
A method comprising:establish a first connection of the first type with another terminal (2) using an address of the first type of the other terminal (2), determining during the established first connection that that an enhanced service is to be provided by using parallel connections of the first type and of a second type as a single logical communication arrangement with the other terminal (2), and establishing, during the established first connection, a second connection of the second type with the other terminal (2) using an address of the second type of the other terminal, the address of the first type being different from the address of the second type.
  7. 13
A method as claimed in any of claims 10 to 12, comprising first establishing a circuit-switched connection, and then communicating information of a packet-switched address of the other terminal with a proxy server.
  8. 14
A computer program comprising program code means, the computer program being configured to perform steps of any of claims 10 to 13 when the program is run on a processor.
  9. 15
A communication system comprising:a network (3) being capable of carrying data by means of a first bearer and a second bearer;and a first terminal (1) and a second terminal (2), each terminal (1, 2) being capable of simultaneously supporting a connection of a first type and a connection of a second type with the other terminal, wherein at least one of the terminals comprises an apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 9.
