  1. 1
A bipolar electrosurgical instrument (10), comprising:a housing (12);a handle assembly (14) operatively associated with said housing;a shaft (18) extending from said housing, said shaft defining a longitudinal axis;an end effector (100) operatively associated with a distal end of said shaft, said end effector comprising: a first jaw member (502) pivotably coupled to said distal end of said shaft;a second jaw member (504) pivotably coupled to said distal end of said shaft and in juxtaposed relation to said first jaw member, said first and second jaw members being moveable from a first orientation in which said first and said second jaw member are axially aligned with said longitudinal axis and at least one of second orientation in which said first and second jaw members are angled with respect to the longitudinal axis, said first and second jaw members having an open condition in which said first and second jaws members are spaced from one another and a closed condition in which said first and second jaw members are substantiate in close proximity to one another, an actuation mechanism (530) operatively connected to said first jaw member, said actuation mechanism operable to move said first jaw member between said first orientation and said at least one of second orientations;characterised by the instrument comprising a locking mechanism (550, 560) operatively associated with said second jaw member, said locking mechanism having a first position in which said locking mechanism engages said second jaw member and prevents movement of said second jaw member between said first orientation and said at least one of second orientation, and a second position in which said locking mechanism is disengaged from said second jaw member and allows for movement of said second jaw member between said first orientation and any of said plurality of second orientations;and a biasing member (522) operatively associated with the first jaw member (502) and the second jaw member (504) to tend to bias the first jaw member (502) and the second jaw member (504) toward one another and to tend to maintain the jaw members in the closed condition, wherein the biasing member (522) has a spring constant selected such that the biasing member (522) tends to maintain the jaw members in the closed condition during manipulation of the jaw members from the first orientation to the at least one second orientation, and wherein when the locking mechanism is in the first position and the jaw members are in the at least one second orientation, the jaw members are movable to the open condition by driving the actuation mechanism in a distal direction with a force sufficient to overcome the force of spring constant of the biasing member (22) so that the first jaw member (502) is caused to be pivoted to space the first jaw member from the second jaw member (504).
  2. 4
The surgical instrument (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one electrode (506) is operatively disposed on the first jaw member (502) and at least another electrode (508) is operatively disposed on the second jaw member (504) and wherein the electrodes (506, 508) transmit radiofrequency energy therebetween.
  3. 5
The surgical instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein one of the jaw members (502, 504) is provided with a reciprocating knife assembly (570) operatively associated therewith and defines a longitudinally oriented knife track (572) formed in a tissue contacting surface (508a) of an electrode (508).
