Knee brace and method for securing the same

Abstract

A knee brace (10) divided into anterior and posterior halves including a ventilated proximal and distal members (40, 42). The brace (10) further including at least one substantially inelastic cross strap (18, 20) adjustable in length and connected to the proximal and distal members (40, 42). The cross strap (18, 20) has first and second portions which intersect at an intersection point (21) located between the proximal and distal members (40, 42) and posterior of the frontal plane of the brace. Tightening devices (22, 23) are provided for incrementally applying tension to the cross strap (18, 20), and buckle assemblies connect the cross strap (18, 20) to the proximal and distal members (40, 42). Ventilated spacer elements (46, 48) having a frictional feature are provided for securing the brace against the leg of a wearer of the brace. The spacer elements (46, 48) generally correspond to the proximal and distal members (40, 42).

  1. 1
A knee brace (10), comprising:a frame having proximal and distal portions (40, 42);and a spacer element (46, 48) connected to the frame (40, 42);characterized in that the spacer element (46, 48) comprises a ventilated and compressible core (94) including a three-dimensional fabric having first and second opposed surfaces, and a frictional coating (92) disposed over the first surface of the core formed by a mesh fabric (90), the second core surface connected to the frame (40, 42), the mesh fabric first surface (90) including a plurality of apertures (88) and the frictional coating (92) having apertures (88) corresponding to the mesh fabric first surface apertures (88), the frictional coating (92) being a continuous layer of silicone elastomer.
  2. 8
A spacer element for use in a knee brace, characterized in that the spacer element comprises a ventilated and compressible core (94) having first and second opposed surfaces, and a frictional coating (92) disposed over the first surface of the core (94), the first surface (90) including a plurality of apertures (88) forming a mesh and the frictional coating (92) having apertures (88) corresponding to the first surface apertures (90), the frictional coating (92) being a continuous layer of silicone elastomer.
