A programmable logic device (PLD), comprising:a plurality of logic elements (LE's) arranged in an array;a base signal routing architecture including a plurality of signal routing lines to route signals among the logic elements, the signal routing lines including short lines and long lines, a hole (302;402) formed within the array of logic elements, and the hole having a perimeter portion and a central portion;wherein the base signal routing architecture is, at least in part, interrupted at the hole (302;402);wherein the programmable logic device further comprises interface circuitry (304;408;504;604;1008) within the perimeter portion of the hole, configurable to couple circuitry within the hole to at least one of the signal routing lines of the signal routing architecture;characterized in that the programmable logic device further comprises an IP function block (110;120;502;1004) within the hole (302;402) and electrically coupled to the interface circuitry (304;408;504;604;1008);a first portion of the short lines connect to the IP function block (110;120;502;1004) and a second portion of the short lines terminates at the IP function block (110;120;502;1004) while at least one long line passes by the IP function block (110;120;502;1004).
