  1. 1
A tracking apparatus comprising:a data acquisition and display device (102), an active optical beacon detection device (116) configured to capture orientation and position information about a wearer of the data acquisition and display device (102) by receiving unique optical signals from at least two active beacons (114) within a field of view of the active beacon detection device (116), wherein each active beacon has a known, fixed location and a unique signature;a see-through display (118) having a defined field of view;and a tracking passive beacon location tracking system (110) configured to track the location of one or more non-stationary items with a passive beacon (128) proximately located on each of said one or more non-stationary items as said tracking system (110) receives energy reflected from an energy source by said passive beacons (128), and a computer (112) in communication with the active optical beacon detection device (116) and the passive beacon location tracking system (110), and configured: to determine from the orientation and position information of the wearer of the data acquisition and display device (102) and the defined field of view of the see-through display (118) which, if any, of the one or more non-stationary items each having a passive beacon located proximately thereon are in the field of view of the see-through display (118) and to cause display of information and instructions about the one or more non-stationary items each having a passive beacon (128) located proximately thereon in the field of view of the see-through display (118), said information and instructions appearing proximately superimposed on at least one of the one or more non-stationary items.
  2. 8
A method of tracking one or more non-stationary items, comprising:providing a source of energy;locating a passive beacon (128) proximately on the one or more non-stationary items, said passive beacon being reactive to the source of energy;providing two or more fixed detectors having known fixed locations relative to one another, each fixed detector capable of detecting energy transmitted or reflected from each passive beacon (128);computing the location of each passive beacon (128) from the energy received by the two or more fixed detectors from each passive beacon as the location of the one or more non-stationary items changes;providing a tracking apparatus comprising a data acquisition and display device (102) having a see-through display (118), an information gathering device (126), a computing device (112), and an active optical beacon detection device (116);capturing data about the one or more non-stationary items with the information gathering device (126);determining information about the one or more non-stationary items from the captured data with the capturing device. Capturing orientation and position information about the data acquisition and display device (102) with the active optical beacon detection device (116) by receiving unique optical signals from at least two active beacons within a field of view of the active optical beacon detection device (116), wherein each active beacon has a known, fixed location and unique signature;determining a field of view of the see-through display (118) from the captured orientation and position information;determining if at least one of the one or more non-stationary items are in the field of view of the see-through display (118) from the location of the passive beacon;and displaying information and instructions on the see-through display (118) about at least one of the one or more non-station items if the one or more non-stationary items are in the field of view of see-through display such that said information and instructions appear proximately superimposed on the one or more non-stationary items when the one or more non-stationary items are viewed through the see-through display.
