12 claims: 4 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A driving method for an image pickup apparatus, said image pickup apparatus including an image pickup elements each having a plurality of pixels arranged in a two-dimensional state, wherein each of pixels has a photoelectric conversion portion, a first holding portion (CH1) for holding a photoelectric conversion signal generated in the photoelectric conversion portion, and a second holding portion (CH2) for holding a noise signal generated in each of the pixels, the driving method characterized by comprising:a first step of holding the photoelectric conversion signal by the first holding portion (CH1) in each of the pixels collectively;a second step of resetting the photoelectric conversion portion after the first step;a third step of holding by the second holding portion (CH2) the noise signal in response to a signal generated at the photoelectric conversion portion in the second step, in the plurality of pixels collectively.
  2. 5
An image pickup apparatus comprising:an image pickup elements having pixels arranged in a two-dimensional state, and each pixel having a photoelectric conversion portion, a first holding portion (CH1) for holding a photoelectric conversion signal generated in said photoelectric conversion portion, and a second holding portion (CH2) for holding a noise signal generated in said pixel;and a driving circuit for collectively applying a first signal, (ϕSH1), a second signal (ϕRES), and a third signal (ϕSH2) to said pixels, characterized in that said first signal (ϕSH1) is collectively applied to said pixels for holding said photoelectric conversion signals to said first holding portion (CH1), said second signal (ϕRES) is collectively applied to said pixels after said first signal (ϕSH1) for resetting said photoelectric conversion portion, and said third signal (ϕSH2) is collectively applied to said pixels for holding said noise signals generated in said pixels to said second holding portion (CH2).
  3. 9
An image pickup apparatus according to any one of claims 5-8, wherein the number of said image pickup element arranged is plural and an object image is picked up by said plurality of image pickup elements.
  4. 10
An image pickup apparatus according to any one of claims 5-9, further comprising a scintillator for converting radiation to visible light.
