15 claims: 11 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A cathode comprising:- a metallic substrate, and- a cathode coating comprising iron disulfide and an electrically conductive material, wherein the cathode coating is applied to at least one surface of the metallic substrate.
  2. 4
The cathode of any of the preceding claims, wherein the cathode coating comprises slip agents and rheological modifiers.
  3. 5
The cathode of any of the preceding claims, wherein the cathode coating is present on all of both major surfaces of the metallic substrate.
  4. 6
The cathode of any of the preceding claims, wherein mass free (uncoated) zones are located on one or both surfaces, one or both long edges or one or both ends of the cathode.
  5. 7
A method of making the cathode as defined in claim 1 by applying a slurry comprising iron disulfide, an electrically conductive material in a solvent to the metallic substrate.
  6. 10
The method of any of claims 7 to 9, wherein the slurry formulation contains a slip agent.
  7. 11
The method of any of claims 7 to 10, wherein the slurry contains a binder.
  8. 12
The method of any of claims 7 to 11, wherein the slurry is applied to both sides of an aluminum strip substrate in a roll coating operation.
  9. 13
The method of any of claims 7 to 12, wherein the cathode is coated on all of both major surfaces of the metallic substrate.
  10. 14
The method of any of claims 7 to 13,or wherein mass free (uncoated) zones are located on one or both surfaces, one or both long edges or one or both ends of the cathode.
  11. 15
An electrode assembly comprising the cathode as defined in any one of claims 1 to 6, an anode and a separator wound together in a spirally wound configuration.
