  1. 1
An apparatus comprising:optical amplifiers (24, 26) optically coupled together, each optical amplifier having a gain;detectors (56, 44, 72, 50) for detecting the level of an input light input to each of the optical amplifiers (24, 26) and the level of an output light output from each of the optical amplifiers (24, 26);a variable attenuator (10) optically coupled between the optical amplifiers (24, 26);and a control circuit (66;76) arranged to control the variable attenuator (10), based on the levels of the input lights and the output lights detected by the detectors (56, 44, 72, 50), so that a sum of the gains of the optical amplifiers (24, 26) becomes constant.
  2. 2
A method of amplifying an optical signal by an apparatus, the method comprising the steps of:amplifying an optical signal by optical amplifiers (24, 26) optically coupled together, wherein each optical amplifier has a gain;detecting, by detectors (56, 44, 72, 50), the level of an input light input to each of the optical amplifiers (24, 26) and the level of an output light output from each of the optical amplifiers (24, 26);and controlling, by a control circuit (66;76), a variable attenuator (10) that is optically coupled between the optical amplifiers (24, 26), based on the levels of the input lights and the output lights detected by the detectors (56, 44, 72, 50) so that a sum of the gains of the optical amplifiers (24, 26) becomes constant.
