  1. 1
A method of generating haptic effects on a device, said method comprising:detecting the presence of an object near an input area of the device;determining a position of the object relative to the input area;determining a functionality on the input area based on the position;and generating a haptic effect on the device in response to the presence detection, wherein said generating the haptic effect comprises selecting a first type of the haptic effect based on the functionality.
  2. 6
A haptically enabled device comprising:an input area;a proximity sensor (14) coupled to said input area, wherein said proximity sensor (14) is adapted to detect the presence of an object near the input area;and a haptic feedback system coupled to said input area, wherein said haptic feedback system is adapted to determine a position of the object relative to the input area, determine a functionality on the input area based on the position, and generate a haptic effect on the device in response to the presence detection, wherein said generation of the haptic effect comprises a selection of a first type of the haptic effect based on the functionality.
  3. 9
A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor (12), cause the processor (12) to generate haptic effects on a device, said processor (12):detecting the presence of an object near an input area of the device;determining a position of the object relative to the input area;determining a functionality on the input area based on the position;and generating a haptic effect on the device in response to the presence detection, wherein said generating the haptic effect comprises selecting a first type of the haptic effect based on the functionality.
  4. 13
A method of generating haptic effects on a device, comprising:detecting a presence of an object near an input area of the device;generating a first type of haptic effect on the device in response to the presence detection;detecting an actual touch of the input area;and generating a second type of haptic effect on the device based on the actual touch.
  5. 14
A method of generating haptic effects on a device, comprising:detecting a hovering of an object over a first button of an input area of the device to a second button of the input area of the device;and generating a first type of haptic effect on the device in response to the detected hovering, wherein the first type of haptic effect provides an indication of the first and second buttons without a user activating the first and second buttons.
