  1. 1
A push-to-talk communication device for participating in a group communication net, comprising:means for receiving information from a user of said push-to-talk communication device who wishes to transmit to a controller (18);means for converting said information into packet data suitable for transmission over a distributed network;and means for transmitting said packet data to said controller (18), wherein means for requesting a current list of available nets that the communication device may join a control ler (18) for;means for receiving the current list of available nets from the controller (18);means for selecting a net from the current list of available nets;means for sending a request to the controller (18) for joining the selected net;means for receiving a response from the controller (18) that the communication device has been added to the list of current participants in the selected net.
  2. 2
A push-to-talk communication device for exiting a net from a group communication network, the device comprising:means for receiving information from a user of said push-to-talk communication device who wishes to transmit to a controller (18);means for converting said information into packet data suitable for transmission over a distributed network;and means for transmitting said packet data to said controller (18), wherein means for sending a request to the controller (18) for exiting the net;means for receiving a response from the controller (18) that the communication device has been deleted from the list of current participants in the net;means for exiting the net.
  3. 3
The communication device of Claim 1 or 2, further comprising:means for storing said packet data until said controller (18) is ready to receive said packet data.
  4. 4
The communication device of Claim 1 or 2, further including:means for determining whether said communication device has the authority to gain transmission privilege over another communication device such that said communication device may interrupt said another communication device having a lower priority level.
  5. 5
The communication device of Claim 1 or 2, further including:means for receiving information from said controller (18) regarding said group communication net.
  6. 6
The communication device of Claim 1 or 2, further including:means for maintaining identification information for said communication device;means for updating said identification information when said identification information has or is about to change;and means for transmitting said updated identification information to said controller (18).
  7. 7
The communication device of Claim 1 or 2, further including:means for determining whether said group communication net is in a dormant mode;and means for activating said controller (18) to bring said group communication net out of said dormant mode.
  8. 8
The communication device of Claim I or 2, wherein said communication device is a push-to-talk communication device, said group communication net comprising a controller (18) to manage said group communication net and interface with said push-to-talk communication device, wherein:said information comprises information signals;said means for converting comprises a processor;said means for transmitting comprises a transmitter further configured to transmit said packet data through a first channel to said controller (18);said means for receiving information from a user comprises a user-activated mechanism configured to activate said transmitter when said user wishes to transmit said packet data to said controller (18);said communication device further comprising: a receiver configured to receive packet data through a second channel from said controller (18).
  9. 9
The communication device of Claim 7, wherein said group communication net comprises a controller (18) to manage said group communication net and interface with said communication device, said communication device further comprising:a first port configured to establish a first channel with said controller (18);wherein: said means for transmitting comprises a processor electrically connected to said first port, wherein said processor is dynamically configurable to send packet data through said first channel to said controller (18);and said means for receiving information from a user comprises a user-activated mechanism configured to allow said user to transmit said packet data to said controller (18).
  10. 10
The communication device according to any of Claims 1 - 9 further comprising:receiving means for receiving a request from a user who wishes to initiate a group call;memory means for buffering media that is received from the user before the request is processed;transmitting means for transmitting the buffered data to a controller (18)after the request is processed;and processing means for processing the received request and the media, the processing means being communicatively coupled with the receiving means, the memory means and the transmitting means wherein the processing means signals the user to stop sending media if the memory means used for buffering the received media runs out of space before the request is completely processed and media communication is not established between the communication device and the controller (18).
  11. 11
A method for permitting a push-to-talk communication device to participate in a group communication net, the communication device comprising:receiving information from a user of said push-to-talk communication device who wishes to transmit to a controller (18);converting said information into packet data suitable for transmission over a distributed network;and transmitting said packet data to said controller (18) characterized by : requesting a current list of available nets that the communication device may join a controller (18) for;receiving the current list of available nets from the controller (18);selecting a net from the current list of available nets;sending a request to the controller (18) for joining the selected net;receiving a response from the controller (18) that the communication device has been added to the list of current participants in the selected net.
  12. 12
A method for permitting a push-to-talk communication device to exit a net within a group communication network, the communication device comprising:receiving information from a user of said push-to-talk communication device who wishes to transmit to a controller;converting said information into packet data suitable for transmission over a distributed network;and transmitting said packet data to said controller characterized by : sending a request to the controller for exiting the net;receiving a response from the controller that the communication device has been deleted from the list of current participants in the net;exiting the net.
  13. 13
The method of Claim 11 or Claim 12 further characterized by :receiving a request from a user who wishes to initiate a group call;buffering media that is received from the user before the request is processed in a memory means;transmitting the buffered data to a controller after the request is processed;processing the received request and the media;signalling the user to stop sending media if the memory means used for buffering the received media runs out of space before the request is completely processed and media communication is not established between the communication device and the controller.
  14. 14
