  1. 1
A fiber (100) comprising:a first cladding region (101) comprising a first cladding material having a first index of refraction, n1;cladding features (102) disposed in said first cladding region, said cladding features comprising a second cladding material having a second index of refraction, n2, wherein n2 is less than n1, and a relative refractive index difference characterized by (ni-n2)/ni is less than 4.5 x 10 -3 ;a core region (105) at least partially surrounded by said cladding features and having a core diameter in the range from 30 µm to 200 µm, wherein at least a portion of the core region is rare-earth doped, the fiber further comprising: a pump cladding (107) disposed beyond said first cladding region and wherein said first cladding region and said cladding features configured such that said core region propagates at least one lower order mode having a wavelength, while limiting propagation of at least one higher order mode having the wavelength by providing said at least one higher order mode with a higher loss than the at least one lower order mode at the wavelength.
  2. 9
A fiber optic amplifier system (2670), comprising:an optical pulse source (2656) providing optical pulses having a nearly diffraction limited input spatial profile;an optical pump source (2655);and the fiber (100, 2650) of any one of claims 1-8, wherein said fiber is configured to receive said pulses and amplify said pulses so as to produce output pulses having nearly diffraction limited output spatial profiles and at least one output pulse having energy in a range from 10 µJ to 10 mJ.
