Auto block and auto discovery in a distributed communication

Abstract

A voicemail system enabling various components of the voicemail system to be distributed geographically yet operate as a seamlessly integrated system is disclosed. A signal gateway interfaces with a telephone network. In addition, one or more media servers interface with the signal gateway as well as the telephone network. The signal gateway is configured to block calls to malfunctioning media servers. The signal gateway monitors the media servers, and responsive to determining that a media server has malfunctioned, the signal gateway initiates auto-blocking such that the telephone network does not route calls to the malfunctioning media server. In addition, the signal gateway is configured to auto-detect a media server responsive to the media server being initialized. The voicemail system can include a variety of other elements, such as one or more system management units and one or more central data and message store systems. Each of the elements in the voicemail system communicate with each other over an internet protocol type network. Any functions in the various elements that require interfacing with the telephone network are simply handled through the signal gateway.

  1. 1
A voice messaging system (100) comprising:a media server (110A) having a first network interface (120) and a second network interface (135a), the media server being operable to generate a message and transmit the message (320) through the second network interface (135a) into a first network (117), and wherein the first network interface (120) is a telephone network interface that acts as a termination point for communication links (125A) coming from a telephone network (130), and wherein the message includes a list of codes for identifying links terminated by the first network interface (120);a system management unit (105) in communication with the media server (110A) via the first network (117), the system management unit being operable to receive the message and transmit a second message having the list of codes therein over the first network (117);a signal gateway (115) having a third network interface (140b) and a fourth network interface (135b), the signal gateway (115) being in communication with the first network (117) via the fourth network interface(135b), the signal gateway being operable to: receive (325) the second message at the fourth network interface (135b);andtransmit (330) a third message to the telephone network (130) via the third network interface (140b), the third message including the list of codes, whereby responsive to receiving the third message, the telephone network (130) routes calls to the media server (110A) using the list of codes.
  2. 11
A voice messaging system based on a distributed architecture that provides auto block and auto discovery functions, the voice messaging system comprising:a first media server having a first interface to a telephone network, the first media server being operable to: act as termination points for a first set of links coming from the telephone network;establish a client connection to a signal gateway upon initialization;generate a heartbeat for the signal gateway;andprovide the signal gateway with carrier identification codes terminated by the media server;a signal gateway being geographically distributed from the first media server and interfacing with the first media server over an IP network, the signal gateway being operable to: monitor the media server;andcommunicate to the telephone network which carrier identification codes are operable;anda second media server having a second interface to the telephone network, the second media server being operable to: act as termination points for a second set of links coming from the telephone network.
