Orthotic or prosthetic cushioned device and method of making the same

Abstract

Orthotic and prosthetic devices having integrated features such as cushioning features are described, as well as methods for computer aided designing and making of these devices. The orthotic or prosthetic devices comprise a cushioning layer superimposed onto an orthotic or prosthetic shell, the cushioning layer comprising an array (35) of discrete solid and resilient cushioning elements (31). In one preferred embodiment, said cushioning structure is a beam, defined around a centerline of any arbitrary shape. In another preferred embodiment, said cushioning structure has the shape of a spiral.

15 claims: 9 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A prosthetic (71) or orthotic (73) device comprising an orthotic or prosthetic shell (13) and a cushioning layer (45), the cushioning layer (45) being superimposed onto the orthotic or prosthetic shell (13), the cushioning layer comprising an array (35) of discrete solid and resilient cushioning elements (31) that are formed in an integral manner with the shell (13).
  2. 3
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim, wherein said cushioning element (31) is a beam (11), defined around a centerline (14) of any arbitrary shape, or said cushioning element has the shape of a spiral (21).
  3. 4
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim, wherein, without compromising function of the cushioning layer (45), another shell (41) is superimposed onto the cushioning layer (45), thus forming a sandwich structure of the cushioning layer (45) inbetween the orthotic or prosthetic shell (13) and the other shell (41).
  4. 5
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim comprising a plurality of cushioning layers (45) and a plurality of shells (13,41) forming another sandwich structure such that each cushioning layer out of said plurality of cushioning layers has a first side and a second side opposite said first side, wherein said first side is superimposed onto a first shell out of said plurality of shells and wherein said second side is superimposed onto a second shell out of said plurality of shells and different from said first shell or said second side is for contacting a part of a patient's body.
  5. 6
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim wherein a said cushioning layer (45) comprises a plurality of different types (11,21,31) of cushioning elements.
  6. 7
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim wherein a said cushioning layer comprises a first cushioning area having first cushioning properties and a second cushioning area having second cushioning properties different from said first cushioning properties, for adapting said orthotic or prosthetic device to a specific patient.
  7. 8
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim wherein said cushioning elements have a maximum dimension smaller than 2 cm, said maximum dimension being defined as the longest edge of the smallest rectangular parallelepiped surrounding a said cushioning element.
  8. 9
Orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim made by rapid prototyping technology (7).
  9. 10
A method for designing an orthotic or prosthetic device according to any previous claim, the method comprising the steps of:• converting scan data describing at least part of a patient body into a 3D virtual model on the basis of which a computer based 3D design model of the orthotic or prosthetic device may be constructed;and • adding automatically or interactively at least one of said cushioning elements from an electronic library (6) of cushioning elements (31) to said 3D design model.
