A marker (100) for use in a magnetomechanical electronic article surveillance (EAS) system comprising:a magnetomechanical active resonator element (104) formed by a planar strip of amorphous magnetostrictive alloy having a composition Fe a Ni b M c wherein a+b+c = 100, wherein a is in a range of 40-70 atomic percent, b is in a range of 10 to less than 25 atomic percent, and c is in a range of 10-50 atomic percent, and where M is the balance of remaining elements;wherein M comprises one or more selected from the group consisting of Si, B, C, and P;a biasing element (108) located adjacent said resonator element;a housing configured to contain said active resonator element (104) and said biasing element (108);and wherein said magnetomechanical active resonator element (104) is subject to batch annealing in the presence of a magnetic field that is substantially transverse to the plane of said element and at a temperature of less than 300°C at a time of greater than one hour;wherein the frequency slope of the active resonator element (104) in Hz/A.m -1 at the operating point is smaller than the maximum slope for the frequency characteristic curve;wherein an amplitude A1 at the operating point is larger than the minimum amplitude for the amplitude characteristic curve.
