11 claims: 9 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
An ultrasonic surgical blade (50) coupled to an ultrasonic transmission waveguide (104) fabricated from a solid core shaft, the surgical blade comprising:a body (122) defining a longitudinal axis, the body having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the distal end is movable relative to the longitudinal axis by the vibrations produced by a transducer;a treatment region (128) extending from the proximal end to the distal end;and a tapered concave surface (121) formed at the distal end extending inwardly into the blade body, characterized in that the tapered concave surface (121) is configured to produce a substantially convergent jet (135) of fluid mist directed towards the longitudinal axis (127).
  2. 4
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any preceding claim, wherein the treatment region comprises at least one coagulating edge.
  3. 5
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the tapered concave surface is an asymmetric surface.
  4. 6
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the tapered concave surface is a substantially concave surface that comprises a convex portion.
  5. 7
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the tapered concave surface is a surface that defines a conical shape extending inwardly into the blade body and wherein the tapered concave surface terminates at an apex (126) within the blade body.
  6. 8
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the tapered concave surface is a surface that defines a frusto-conical shape extending inwardly into the blade body and wherein the tapered concave surface terminates prior to reaching the apex (126) within the blade body.
  7. 9
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the tapered concave surface is a surface that defines a partial spheroid extending inwardly into the blade body.
  8. 10
The ultrasonic surgical blade and ultrasonic transmission waveguide of any preceding claim, wherein the treatment region comprises at least one cutting edge.
  9. 11
A surgical instrument (10), comprising:a transducer (14) configured to produce vibrations at a predetermined frequency;the ultrasonic blade (50) and ultrasonic transmission waveguide (104) of any preceding claim extending along the longitudinal axis and coupled to the transducer.
