Verifying EPG data

Abstract

A method for determining whether one or more of a plurality of data fields for a plurality of television stations of a database that stores program schedule information for an electronic program guide contains missing or invalid data characterised by: allowing a user to select a station from the plurality of stations for verification of at least one of the data fields for the selected station; allowing the user to select a time range for the verification of the data fields; automatically analysing the data fields for the selected station for errors, wherein the errors are comprised of invalid or missing data; listing the detected errors; and providing the user with the ability to correct the detected errors.

15 claims: 14 independent, 1 dependent

  1. 1
A method of making a schedule of programs available via a distribution system, the method comprising:receiving program listings from one or more information providers, the program listings comprising program schedule data for a plurality of program channels;extracting the program schedule data for providing a program schedule for the distribution system;andtransmitting the extracted program schedule data to the distribution system to make the program schedule available via said system;characterized by: receiving one or more verification options (21) for detecting errors in the program schedule data;automatically analysing with a data processor at least a portion of the extracted program schedule data in accordance with the one or more verification options (21);providing a report of detected errors;andproviding editing means (30, 40) for correcting the detected errors.
  2. 2
The method defined in claim 1, wherein receiving the one or more verification options comprises receiving one or more verification options for at least one of invalid data and missing data (20).
  3. 3
The method defined in claim 1, wherein receiving the one or more verification options comprises receiving one or more verification options for at least one of missing titles, missing copy, missing fields, lengthy titles, lengthy copy, editorial errors, inappropriate language, missing movie ratings, missing program type, and missing price for a pay program (20).
  4. 4
The method defined in claim 1, wherein receiving the one or more verification options comprises receiving one or more verification options for at least one of a group of cable systems, a single cable system, and a head end.
  5. 6
The method defined in claim 1, wherein automatically analyzing with a data processor comprises:selecting a channel list file that identifies one or more program channels;andautomatically comparing with the data processor the channel list file against the at least a portion of the program schedule data to determine whether any of the one or more program channels in the file is missing from the at least a portion of the program schedule data.
  6. 7
The method defined in claim 1, further comprising formatting the received program schedule data to a predefined format prior to said analysing.
  7. 8
The method defined in claim 1, wherein the distribution system is a cable or other pay television system.
  8. 9
The method defined in claim 1, further comprising transmitting by the distribution system said program schedule data, after said editing to correct the detected errors, to a plurality of remote locations.
  9. 10
The method defined in claim 9, wherein the plurality of remote locations comprises a plurality of user television equipment.
  10. 11
The method defined in claim 1, further comprising automatically analyzing with the data processor the at least a portion of the program schedule data to determine whether each of the following inequalities is substantially met:Tn+1>Tn+RTnTn+1<Tn+RTn where Tn denotes u schedule time and RTn denotes a run time for the nth program listing for a program channel selected from the plurality of program channels, and Tn+1 denotes a schedule time for the n+1th program listing for the program channel.
  11. 12
The method defined in claim 1, further comprising providing the report to include a start time and an end time of one or more of a schedule gap and a schedule overlap.
  12. 13
The method defined in claim 1, further comprising editing the received program schedule data prior to said analysing.
  13. 14
The method defined in claim 1, wherein providing the editing means comprises providing an option for a user to correct the detected errors before the program schedule is transmitted by the distribution system.
  14. 15
A system for making a schedule of programs available via a distribution system, comprising means for carrying out the method defined in any of claims 1-14.
