15 claims: 12 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
Holographic display for generating a holographic reconstruction of a three dimensional scene (3D-S) comprising single points (OP), wherein the reconstruction of a single point (OP) only requires a sub-hologram (SH) as a subset of an entire hologram (H∑SLM) to be encoded, as encoding data, on a spatial light modulator (SLM) of the holographic display, the holographic display comprises a light source, an optical system, the spatial light modulator (SLM), and a graphics card comprising graphics sub-systems implementing a 3D rendering pipeline, the light source and the optical system are arranged to illuminate the spatial light modulator (SLM), wherein the holographic display is a part of a communications system, in which two users communicate over the internet and where each user uses such a holographic display, characterized in that the holographic display is adapted to provide voice and 3D image over internet services or communications, and in that the holographic display further comprises additional processing units extending the 3D rendering pipeline of the graphics card, said additional processing units being arranged to perform sequential holographic transformation of points in three-dimensional space by executing holographic calculations to determine values of the sub-hologram (SH) immediately as soon as values of colors and depth of one processed point (OP) in space is available after having been processed by the 3D rendering pipeline.
  2. 3
Holographic display of claims 1 or 2, in which the voice and 3D image over internet or voice and video 3D image over internet services or communications are provided in real time.
  3. 4
Holographic display of any previous claim, wherein the spatial light modulator (SLM) is pixelated and wherein a virtual observer window (VOW) is within one periodicity interval of the Fourier transform of a hologram displayed on the pixelated spatial light modulator (SLM), and wherein virtual observer windows (VOW) are placed at a viewer's or viewers' eyes with an observer tracking system.
  4. 5
Holographic display of any previous claim, in which the light source is a light emitting diode.
  5. 6
Holographic display of any previous claim, in which the spatial light modulator (SLM) comprises pixels on a substrate, in which calculations performed to determine hologram encoding data of the spatial light modulator (SLM) pixels are performed using circuitry which is on the same substrate as the pixels of the spatial light modulator (SLM).
  6. 9
Holographic display of any of claims 1 to 8, comprising a display memory and holographic display clusters, wherein real space image data which is used in the holographic calculation is a difference between successive real space image frames, and holographic display data is sent to the holographic display clusters in the form of sub-hologram difference data and display memory location data.
  7. 10
Holographic display of any previous claim, which is arranged to provide voice and video 3D image over internet peer-to-peer services or communications.
  8. 11
Holographic display of any previous claim, which is arranged to provide file sharing services or which is arranged to provide file sharing services over a computer network to which it is connected.
  9. 12
Holographic display of any previous claim, which is arranged to provide instant messaging services or communications over a global network or over a computer network to which it is connected and/or which is arranged to provide communication services over a computer network to which it is connected.
  10. 13
Holographic display of any previous claim, which is arranged to provide temporary use of online, non-downloadable computer software that allows subscribers to utilize voice and 3D image over internet or voice and video 3D image over internet services or communications and/or for which there is provided online software for downloading that allows subscribers to utilize voice and 3D image over internet or voice and video 3D image over internet services or communications and/or for which there is provided access to domains and domain database systems for access to holographic display data.
  11. 14
A communications system, in which two users communicate over the internet using real-time holographic communication based on voice and 3D image over internet or voice and video 3D image over internet, each user using a holographic display according to any previous claim.
  12. 15
A method of generating a holographic reconstruction of a three dimensional scene (3D-S), made up of multiple discrete points (OP), using the holographic display of any of claims 1 to 13, wherein the reconstruction of such a discrete point (OP) of the three-dimensional scene (3D S) only requires a sub-hologram (SH) as a subset of an entire hologram (H∑SLM) to be encoded on the spatial light modulator (SLM), the method comprising the step of:providing the holographic display of any of claims 1 to 13;performing sequential holographic transformation of points in three-dimensional space by executing holographic calculations to determine values of the sub-hologram (SH) immediately as soon as values of colors and depth of one processed point (OP) in space is available after having been processed by the 3D rendering pipeline;and encoding the hologram on the spatial light modulator (SLM).
