  1. 1
A standoff iris image acquisition system comprising:an image sensor (27);and an optics assembly (11) coupled to the image sensor (27);and a computer (30) coupled to the image sensor (27);wherein: the optics assembly (11) is for conveying images (29) of a subject (20) to the image sensor (27) with a varying focus;the image sensor is for acquiring a sequence of images from the optics assembly (11) of the subject during the varying focus by the optics assembly;and the computer is configured to extract a window (31) of an area of interest for analysis of an iris image, wherein: a frame period between exposures for images (29) is less than or equal to a depth of field of focus divided by focus velocity;and the focus velocity is a change in focus distance relative to the optics assembly (11) per unit time.
  2. 6
A method for iris image acquisition comprising:providing a sensor (27) for capturing images (29);conveying a plurality of images (29) with a lens (12) onto the sensor (27);capturing the plurality of images (29) with the sensor (27) while varying a focus with the lens (12) of at least two of the plurality of images (29);wherein a frame period between exposures for images (29) is less than or equal to a depth of field of focus divided by focus velocity;and the focus velocity is a change in focus distance relative to the optics assembly (11) per unit time;selecting an image (29) from at least two of the plurality of images having a sufficient focus on a subject (20);and extracting a window (31) of an area of interest within the images (29) to capture a target (28) on the subject (20) for analysis of an iris image of the subject;and wherein: a rate of processing images (29) is independent of a rate of capturing;processing images comprises selecting an image (29) out of at least two images of the plurality of images, as having a good focus;an item of the images (29) is at least a portion of the subject (20);and the sufficient focus is of the target (28) within the window (31) in the image (29).
