Cushion bearing implants for load bearing applications

Abstract

A prosthesis for use with a natural bone and comprising a flexible bone interface element (2500) configured to be mounted onto said natural bone, said flexible bone interface element comprising a unitary element molded of a single material and having a contact surface (2504) which is configured to directly contact said natural bone in generally static engagement therewith, and wherein said contact surface is configured with a configuration-pattern comprising of surface recess portions (2510,2512) defined by bone contact ridges (2506,2508) surrounding said surface recess portions, and wherein said surface recess portions have a bottom surface and walls surfaces and said flexible bone interface element being formed of material, which is more flexible than bone material of said natural bone.

  1. 1
A prosthesis for use with a natural bone and comprising a flexible bone interface element configured to be mounted onto said natural bone, said flexible bone interface element comprising a unitary element molded of a single material and having a contact surface which is configured to directly contact said natural bone in generally static engagement therewith, and wherein said contact surface is configured with a configuration-pattern comprising of surface recess portions defined by bone contact ridges surrounding said surface recess portions, and wherein said surface recess portions have a bottom surface and walls surfaces and said flexible bone interface element being formed of material, which is more flexible than bone material of said natural bone.
  2. 3
A prosthesis according to any of claims 1-2 wherein said wall surfaces of channels are inclined inwardly creating an undercut section with a wider lower dimension and a narrower upper dimension.
  3. 6
A prosthesis according to claims 1-5 wherein at least one of bone contact surface and peripheral channels surfaces is configured with a rough texture.
  4. 7
A prosthesis according to any of claims 1-5 wherein at least one of bone contact surface and peripheral channels surfaces is treated by atomic surface treatment.
  5. 8
A prosthesis according to any of claims 1-5 wherein at least one of bone contact surface and peripheral channels surfaces is at least partially coated with a bioactive substance stimulating bone-growth enhancing implant fixation to bone.
  6. 10
A prosthesis according to any of claims 1-5 wherein a mesh of composite material is configured in channels generally in a floating position mostly clear of bottom and walls of said channels.
  7. 12
A prosthesis according to any of claims 10-11 wherein said composite material comprises KEVLAR(R).
  8. 13
A prosthesis according to any of claims 10-11 wherein said composite material comprises DYNEEMA(R).
  9. 14
A prosthesis according to any of claims 10-13 wherein said mesh is embedded (molded) within bone contact surfaces.
  10. 15
A prosthesis according to any of claims 10-13 wherein said mesh is embedded (molded) within non-bone contact surfaces.
