A computer-implemented process for controlling a user-selected electronic component within an environment using a pointing device (10), comprising:a storing step for storing a plurality of prototype sequences generated in a training phase, each representing an output of orientation sensors of the pointing device that would be expected if the pointing device were manipulated to perform a predefined gesture associated with a particular command during the training phase;an inputting step (1408, 1510) for inputting an orientation message transmitted by the pointing device, said orientation message comprising orientation sensor readings generated by orientation sensors of the pointing device;a recording step for recording a prescribed one or ones of the pointing device sensor outputs taken from the orientation message inputted whenever a user indicates the performance of a gesture representing a control action for the selected electronic component is taking place, the recording step comprising: (a) a waiting step (2008) for waiting for the orientation message to be received;(b) a switch state determining step (1410, 1512, 2010) for determining whether a switch state indicates that a pointing device switch has been activated by the user to indicate that the gesture is being performed, said switch state determining step being executed whenever the orientation message is received;(c) a repeating step for repeating steps (a) and (b) whenever it is determined that the switch state does not indicate that the pointing device switch is activated;and (d) an output recording step (1412, 1514, 1800, 2012) for recording the prescribed one or ones of the pointing device sensor outputs taken from the received orientation message whenever it is determined that the switch state does indicate that the pointing device switch is activated;for each (1802) prototype sequence of the plurality of stored prototype sequences, a matching step (1804-1810) including: comparing the recorded sensor output to various versions of the prototype sequence that are scaled up and down in amplitude and/or warped in time;computing (1804) a similarity indicator between the recorded sensor output and the prototype sequence based on the comparison;identifying (1808) a largest similarity indicator among the previously computed similarity indicators;and designating (1810) the prototype sequence associated to the largest similarity indicator as a best match to the recorded sensor output;a determining step (1812) for determining whether the similarity indicator of the designated prototype sequence exceeds a prescribed similarity threshold and if the similarity indicator of the designated prototype sequence exceeds the prescribed similarity threshold, a designating step (1814) for designating that the user has performed a gesture associated with the designated prototype sequence in the training phase;and an implementing step (1816) for implementing a command associated with the designated gesture in the training phase.
