14 claims: 3 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A hearing assistance device (100) for playing processed sound inside a wearer's ear canal, comprising:a first housing (115);signal processing electronics disposed at least partially within the first housing;a first microphone (101, 131) connected to the first housing, the first microphone configured to receive sound from outside the wearer's ear canal when the hearing assistance device is worn and in use and produce a first signal;a low-pass filter (207) having a low-pass filter cutoff frequency, the low-pass filter configured to produce low frequency information by filtering the first signal;a second microphone (102, 132) configured to receive sound from inside the wearer's ear canal when the hearing assistance device is worn and in use and produce a second signal;a high-pass filter (209) having a high-pass filter cutoff frequency, the high-pass filter configured to produce high frequency information including spatial cues by filtering the second signal;and microphone mixing electronics (103, 203, 403, 503) in communication with the signal processing electronics and in communication with the first microphone and the second microphone, the microphone mixing electronics adapted to combine the low frequency information and the high frequency information to produce a composite audio signal providing spatial cues for enhanced spatial perception.
  2. 4
The hearing assistance device of any of claims 1 and 2, wherein the spatial cues include spectral notches detected from the second signal by parametric spectrum modeling.
  3. 12
A method, comprising:receiving a first audio signal from a first microphone (101, 131) of a hearing assistance device (100), the first microphone adapted to be placed outside a wearer's ear canal;filtering the first audio signal to produce low frequency information by using a low-pass filter (207) having a low-pass filter cutoff frequency;receiving a second audio signal from a second microphone (102, 132) of the hearing assistance device, the second microphone adapted to be placed inside the wearer's ear canal;filtering the second audio signal to produce high frequency information including spatial cues by using a high-pass filter (209) having a high-pass filter cutoff frequency;combining the low frequency information and the high frequency information to produce a composite audio signal providing spatial cues for enhanced spatial perception;and playing the composite audio signal inside the wearer's ear canal using a speaker (116, 136).
