    A method of displaying information on a display (146) associated with a cellular telephone (100), the method comprising:displaying information from at least a first of a plurality of stand alone, separately executable standby screen applications (122) on the display (146) while the cellular telephone (100) is in a standby mode;and then automatically selecting a second of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) based on a determination that at least one temporal parameter of a set of pre-defined rules and at least one location parameter of the set of pre-defined rules have been satisfied and automatically replacing the displayed information from the first of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) with information from the second of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) while the cellular telephone (100) remains in the standby mode;and then automatically replacing the displayed information from the second of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) with information from a third of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) while the cellular telephone (100) remains in the standby mode based on a determination that at least one of the at least one temporal parameter and at least one location parameter is no longer satisfied;wherein the second of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) comprises a work-related widget comprising at least one of a calendar widget and a task list widget and the at least one location parameter comprises a work address, and wherein the information from the second of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) is displayed based on a determination that a day is a workday, a time is within the at least one temporal parameter, and a location of the cellular telephone (100) is within a pre-specified distance from the work address.

    The method of Claim 1, wherein the third of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) comprises a traffic widget, and wherein the information of the traffic widget comprises traffic information for a pre-defined route from the work address to a home address, and wherein the traffic information is displayed after a time of the at least one temporal parameter.

    The method of Claim 1, wherein the first of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) comprises a traffic widget, and wherein the information of the traffic widget comprises traffic information for a pre-defined route from a home address to the work address, and wherein the traffic information is displayed before a time of the at least one temporal parameter.

    The method of Claim 1, wherein the first of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) comprises a weather widget, and wherein information of the weather widget comprises weather information for the workday, and wherein the weather information is displayed before a time of the at least one temporal parameter.

    The method of Claim 1, wherein the at least one temporal parameter comprises a time when appointment book information from the calendar widget will be displayed.

    The method of Claim 1, wherein the at least one temporal parameter comprises a time when a task list from the task list widget will be displayed.

    The method of Claim 1, further comprising providing an audible or vibrating notification that the displayed information from the first of the plurality of standby screen applications (122) has been replaced with information from the second of the plurality of standby screen applications.

    A cellular telephone (100), comprising:a processor (110);a transceiver (150, 160) coupled to the processor (110);a user interface that includes a first display (146) coupled to the processor (110);a memory (120) coupled to the processor (110);a plurality of applications (122) that are configured to run on the processor (110), wherein each of the plurality of applications (122) generate information that may be displayed on the first display (146) when the cellular telephone (100) is in standby mode;and a control application (124) that is configured to automatically adjust what of the information generated by the plurality of applications (122) is displayed on the first display (146) while the cellular telephone (100) is in standby mode based on at least one temporal parameter that is received from a user (180) of the cellular telephone (100);wherein the control application (124) is further configured to use at least one location parameter that is received from a user (180) of the cellular telephone (100) to automatically adjust what of the information generated by the plurality of applications (122) is displayed on the first display (146) or to determine the information that is generated by the plurality of applications (122).

    The cellular telephone (100) of Claim 8, wherein the control application (124) is configured to replace information provided by a first of the plurality of applications (122) with information provided by a second of the plurality of applications (122) in response to at least one of a time of day criteria, a day of the week criteria and/or a criteria involving the location of the cellular telephone (100) being satisfied.
