13 claims: 4 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
An image recording medium (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600) comprising:a substrate (110) having a hot melt extruded ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) formed on a first side of said substrate (110), said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprising at least 50% of a hydrogel by weight;wherein said hydrogel is capable of absorbing at least 50% of its dry weight of water;and wherein said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprises more than one layer of the hydrogel material with different functional additives or amounts of functional additives coextruded to create said ink-receiving layer.
  2. 9
A printing system (800), comprising:an ink dispensing apparatus (810);and an image recording medium (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600) having a hot melt extruded ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprising at least 50% by weight of a hydrogel and said hydrogel being capable of absorbing at least 50% of its dry weight of water;and wherein said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprises more than one layer of the hydrogel material with different functional additives or amounts of functional additives coextruded to create said ink-receiving;wherein said ink dispensing apparatus (810) is configured to dispense liquid ink (820) on said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) of said image recording medium (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600).
  3. 10
A method of fabricating an image recording medium (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600), comprising:providing a substrate (110);and extruding an ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) on a first side of said substrate (110), said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprising at least 50% by weight of a hydrogel;wherein said hydrogel is capable of absorbing at least 50% of its dry weight of water;and wherein said ink-receiving layer (120, 320, 520) comprises more than one layer of the hydrogel material with different functional additives or amounts of functional additives coextruded to create said ink-receiving layer.
  4. 11
An image recording medium (500) according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein the image recording medium is an inkjet recording medium.
