  1. 1
A tobacco-containing, electrically-powered smoking article (10) comprising:(a) an outer housing (20) having a mouth-end and an end distal to the mouth-end, wherein the mouth-end comprises an opening adapted for egress of an aerosol generated within the smoking article and the distal end comprises an opening adapted for intake of air into the smoking article;(b) an electrical power source (36) within the outer housing (20) and operatively positioned downstream of the opening in the distal end of the outer housing (20) such that air entering the smoking article passes the electrical power source (36);(c) a first electrical resistance heating element (70) within the outer housing, powered by said electrical power source (36), and operatively positioned for heating air drawn through the opening in the distal end of the outer housing (20);(d) a tobacco material (89) positioned within the outer housing (20);(e) an aerosol-forming material (101) positioned within the outer housing (20) in fluid communication with said tobacco material (89) such that air can be drawn through both the tobacco material and the aerosol-forming material;(f) a second electrical resistance heating element (72) within the outer housing (20), powered by said electrical power source (36), and operatively positioned for heating the aerosol-forming material (101) and tobacco material (89);and (g) a puff-actuated controller (50) adapted for regulating current flow through at least one of said first and second electrical resistance heating elements (70, 72) during draw, the controller comprising a sensor (60) adapted for sensing draw by the user on the smoking article;wherein the aerosol-forming material (101) and tobacco (89) are contained within a cartridge (85) positioned between the second resistance heating element (72) and the mouth-end of the outer housing (20), the cartridge (85) having an opening facing the second electrical resistance heating element (72) and a sealed mouth-end region such that aerosol generated within the cartridge (85) initially flows in the direction of the second electrical resistance heating element (72).
  2. 2
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein the aerosol-forming material (101) and tobacco (89) are in the form of an intimate mixture within the cartridge (85).
  3. 3
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein the aerosol-forming material (101) and tobacco material (89) are positioned in separate, adjacent regions within the cartridge (85).
  4. 4
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tobacco material (89) is in the form of an extract.
  5. 5
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein the aerosol-forming material (101) comprises glycerin, propylene glycol, or a mixture thereof.
  6. 6
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tobacco material (89) is in the form of tobacco cut filler.
  7. 7
The smoking article of Claim 1, further comprising a mouthpiece (35) through which air can be drawn from the mouth-end of the outer housing, the mouthpiece being removably attached to the outer housing (20).
  8. 8
The smoking article of Claim 1, wherein the cartridge (85) contains a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate fibers, a paper material incorporating carbon particles therein, a paper material incorporating calcium carbonate particles therein, a fibrous carbonaceous material, and a reconstituted tobacco material incorporating particles of a heat conductive material.
  9. 9
The smoking article of Claim 1, further comprising at least one air passageway (115) extending longitudinally between an inner surface of the outer housing (20) and an outer surface of the cartridge (85) having the sealed mouth-end region.
