  1. 1
A medical device (10) for occluding a left atrial appendage, the medical device comprising:a first portion (14) having a first diameter and comprising at least one plane of occlusion configured to be positioned outside of the left atrial appendage;and a second portion (12) having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter and comprising at least one plane of occlusion configured to be positioned within a cavity defined by the left atrial appendage, the second portion comprising a cylindrical surface formed of a metal fabric comprising a plurality of wire strands configured to engage the cavity wall along the entire length of the second portion;and a transition segment (19) having a transition diameter substantially smaller than the first and second diameters and coupling the first portion (14) and the second portion (12) and configured to provide flexibility therebetween, the second portion (12) having said cylindrical surface along the entire length of the second portion from a planar non-tapered end surface distal to the first portion (14) to an opposing end surface proximal to the transition segment (19) and the first portion (14).
  2. 2
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the at least one plane of occlusion of the first portion is configured to overlie an opening of the left atrial appendage.
  3. 3
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the first portion (14) comprises a plurality of planes of occlusion configured to be positioned outside of the left atrial appendage.
  4. 4
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the second portion (12) comprises a plurality of planes of occlusion configured to be positioned within the cavity defined by the left atrial appendage.
  5. 5
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the first diameter (A) is at least about 10% larger than the second diameter (B).
  6. 6
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the ratio of the first diameter (A) to the transition diameter (H) is about 6 to 4.5.
  7. 7
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the ratio of the second diameter (B) to the transition diameter (H) is about 2 to 4.
  8. 8
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the first and second portions (14, 12) comprise at least one layer of occluding material.
  9. 9
The medical device of Claim 8, wherein the at least one layer of occluding material comprises a woven material.
  10. 10
The medical device of Claim 1, further comprising a plurality of hooks (20) extending from the second portion (12) and configured to engage the cavity within the left atrial appendage.
  11. 12
The medical device of Claim 10, wherein the plurality of hooks (20) do not comprise barbs.
  12. 13
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the first portion (14) comprises a disk portion.
  13. 14
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the first portion (14) and the second portion (12) are configured to be constrained to a smaller diameter than an expanded preset configuration for delivery to the left atrial appendage and to self expand to the preset configuration when unconstrained.
  14. 15
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the at least one plane of occlusion associated with respective first and second portions (14, 12) comprises a metal material, a polyester material, a bio-compatible polymer material, or a combination thereof.
  15. 16
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the at least one plane of occlusion associated with respective first and second portions (14, 12) comprises a surface configured to be oriented generally transverse to the flow of blood so as to facilitate the formation of thrombus.
  16. 17
The medical device of Claim 1, wherein the medical device is configured for delivery over a guidewire.
  17. 19
The medical device of Claim 18, wherein the medical device is configured to be constrained within a catheter having an outer diameter of about 11 French (3.67 mm) or less.
  18. 20
The medical device of Claim 18, wherein the medical device is configured to be constrained within a catheter having an outer diameter of about 10 French (3.33 mm) or less.
  19. 21
The medical device of Claim 18, wherein the medical device is configured to be constrained within a catheter having an outer diameter of about 9 French (3 mm) or less.
  20. 23
The medical device of Claim 22, wherein the medical device is configured to extend to a depth of about 15 mm or less within the cavity defined by the left atrial appendage.
  21. 24
The medical device of Claim 22, wherein the medical device is configured to extend to a depth of about 10 mm or less within the cavity defined by the left atrial appendage.
  22. 26
A delivery assembly for delivering a medical device (10) for occluding a left atrial appendage, the delivery assembly comprising:the medical device of any one of claims 1 to 25;a delivery device (28) coupled to the medical device (10);and a catheter (29) configured to overlie the delivery device (28) and constrain the medical device therein, wherein the catheter is axially displaceable relative to the delivery device.
  23. 27
The delivery assembly of Claim 26, wherein the delivery device (28) and catheter (29) are configured to be delivered to the left atrial appendage with a guidewire.
  24. 28
The delivery assembly of Claim 26, wherein the catheter (29) is axially displaceable relative to the delivery device (28) such that the medical device (10) is configured to be deployed from the catheter in response to displacement of the catheter with respect to the delivery device.
  25. 29
The delivery assembly of Claim 28, wherein the medical device (10) is configured to be recaptured within the catheter (29) in response to displacement of the catheter with respect to the delivery device.
