EP2072017A2

Endoscopic bipolar electrosurgical forceps

Abstract

An endoscopic bipolar forceps for clamping and sealing tissue includes first and second jaw members pivotally attached in opposing relation relative to one another which are moveable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second clamping position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. A drive rod assembly connects each of the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the jaw members are capable of conducting bipolar energy through the tissue held therebetween. A handle attached to the drive rod assembly imparts movement of the first and second jaw members from the first and second positions. At least one stop member is attached to a tissue sealing surface of the jaw members for controlling the distance between the jaw members. The forceps may also include a yoke member for insulating the jaw members from one another to prevent short circuiting of the forceps. Preferably, the yoke member and jaw members interface is dimensioned to withstand the high shearing forces normally associated with sealing tissue.

15 claims: 7 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A bipolar endoscopic forceps (10) for sealing tissue, comprising:first and second jaw members (80, 82) pivotally attached in opposing relation relative to one another, the jaw members relatively movable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second clamping position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween with a predetermined clamping force, the jaw members each including a tissue sealing surface;a drive rod assembly (11) adapted for connecting the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the first jaw member has a first electrical potential and the second jaw member has a second electrical potential and the jaw members are capable of conducting bipolar energy through the tissue held therebetween;a handle (18) attached to the drive rod assembly for imparting movement of the first and second jaw members between the first and second positions;and at least one stop member (139) attached to at least one of the tissue sealing surfaces of the jaw members for controlling the distance between opposing sealing surfaces of the jaw members.
  2. 4
A bipolar endoscopic forceps according to claims 2 or 3, wherein each of the jaw members includes a cam slot (86, 88) located therethrough, wherein the at least one detent engages the cam slots such that movement of the yoke imparts movement of the jaw members relative to one another.
  3. 6
A bipolar endoscopic forceps according to claims 4 or 5, wherein each of the cam slots includes a cul-de-sac (78a, 78b) defined therein configured to relieve shear stress on the at least one detent approximately when the shoulder portions of the yoke engage the flanges of the jaw members.
  4. 7
A bipolar endoscopic forceps according to claims 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 wherein the yoke is made from an electrically insulative material.
  5. 11
A bipolar endoscopic forceps (10) for sealing tissue, comprising:first and second jaw members (80, 82) pivotally attached in opposing relation relative to one another, the jaw members relatively movable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second clamping position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween, the jaw members each including a tissue sealing surface;a drive rod assembly (11) adapted for connecting the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the first jaw member has a first electrical potential and the second jaw member has a second electrical potential and the jaw members are capable of conducting bipolar energy through the tissue held therebetween;a handle (18) attached to the drive rod assembly for imparting movement of the first and second jaw members between the first and second positions;at least one stop member (139) attached to at least one of the tissue sealing surfaces of the jaw members for creating a gap distance of about 0.001 to about 0.006 inches between opposing tissue sealing surfaces of the jaw members;and an actuator (26) having a lost motion connection (40) for maintaining a predetermined clamping force between opposing tissue surfaces of the jaw members.
  6. 14
A bipolar endoscopic forceps according to claims 12 or 13, wherein an inner periphery of the cam slots are shaped to impart at least two different movements to the jaw members relative to one another.
  7. 15
A bipolar endoscopic forceps according to claims 13 or 14, wherein each of the cam slots includes a cul-de-sac (78a, 78b) defined therein configured to relieve shear stress on the at least one detent approximately when the shoulder portions of the yoke engage the flanges of the jaw members.
