  1. 1
A method for communicating land mobile radio, i.e. LMR, content within a single LMR network (42) configured to use a plurality LMR protocols, said LMR network comprising a plurality of LMR units (40) configured to communicate using a plurality of LMR transport-layer protocols and an LMR infrastructure comprising a transport protocol interface, said method comprising:a) with at least one LMR unit of the plurality of LMR units (40): i) generating LMR content using an LMR application-layer protocol;ii) selecting a first LMR transport-layer protocol from the plurality of LMR transport-layer protocols, wherein the first LMR transport-layer protocol and said LMR application-layer protocol may belong to different LMR protocols;iii) encapsulating said LMR content using a said first LMR transport-layer protocol;iv) communicating the encapsulated LMR content using the selected LMR transport-layer protocol within the LMR network (42), b) with the transport protocol interface of the LMR infrastructure: i) processing said LMR content that is encapsulated using said first LMR transport-layer protocol, ii) re-encapsulating the LMR content using a second LMR transport-layer protocol different from the first LMR transport-layer protocol, iii) 2-wherein said LMR application-layer protocol content is not changed by said re-encapsulating.
  2. 2
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising using a multi-layer protocol stack for communicating the LMR content.
  3. 3
A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein the multi-layer protocol stack comprises an LMR application layer and an LMR transport layer.
  4. 4
A method in accordance with claim 3 wherein the protocol for the LMR application layer is different than the protocol for the LMR transport layer.
  5. 5
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the LMR content comprises content defining at least one of LMR services, operations and controls and including at least one of voice data, emergency signal data, control data relating to selecting a particular talk group, LMR data for transfer between a radio unit and a server and reprogramming data.
  6. 6
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising performing end-to-end encryption between a plurality of LMR units (40).
  7. 7
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising performing end-to-end digital voice encoding between a plurality of LMR units (40).
  8. 8
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising configuring the LMR content for communication using one of a Project 25, i.e. TIA 102, protocol, an ETSI TETRA airlink protocol, an OpenSky proprietary format, an EDACS proprietary format, and a NetworkFirst format.
  9. 9
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising automatically selecting the first LMR transport-layer protocol.
  10. 10
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising selecting the first LMR transport-layer protocol based on a user input.
  11. 11
A wireless communication system (20) configured to use a plurality LMR protocols comprising:a plurality of LMR units (40) configured to communicate using a plurality of LMR transport-layer protocols, a first LMR unit (40) configured to generate LMR content using an LMR application-layer protocol;select a first LMR transport-layer protocol from the plurality of LMR transport-layer protocols, wherein the first LMR transport-layer protocol and said LMR application-layer protocol may belong to different LMR protocols;encapsulate said LMR content using said first LMR transport-layer protocol;communicate the encapsulated LMR content using the selected LMR transport-layer protocol within the LMR network (42), a land mobile radio (LMR) infrastructure configured to communicate with a plurality of LMR units (40) within a plurality of coverage areas of an LMR system, at least some of the plurality of coverage areas configured to communicate LMR content using different LMR transport-layer protocols;receive LMR content generated using an LMR application-layer protocol and encapsulated using a first LMR transport-layer protocol from a said first LMR unit (40) of said plurality of LMR units;and process received LMR content that is encapsulated using a the first LMR transport-layer protocol and re-encapsulate the LMR content for communication using a second LMR transport-layer protocol, different from the first LMR transport-layer protocol, wherein said LMR application-layer protocol content is not changed by said re-encapsulating.
  12. 12
A wireless communication system (20) in accordance with claim 11 wherein the LMR infrastructure is configured to communicate the LMR content using a multi-layer protocol stack.
  13. 13
A wireless communication system (20) in accordance with claim 11 wherein the LMR infrastructure is configured to communicate using one of a Project 25, i.e. TIA 102, protocol, an ETSI TETRA airlink protocol, an OpenSky proprietary format, an EDACS proprietary format, and a NetworkFirst format.
  14. 14
A wireless communication system (20) in accordance with claim 11 wherein the LMR infrastructure is configured to communicate LMR content comprising content defining at least one of LMR services, operations and controls and including at least one of voice data, emergency signal data, control data relating to selecting a particular talk group, LMR data for transfer between a radio unit and a server and reprogramming data.
  15. 15
