Systems and methods for seamless host migration

Abstract

Systems and methods of the present invention for maintaining network data distribution are provided. Network data may be distributed in such as manner as to allow a network session to weather interrupted communications between host (200) and clients (310A-D) without significant loss of data. Embodiments of the present invention provide for one or more clients (310A) to serve as backup host(s) for the network session. When the other clients transmit data to the host, they may also transmit the data to one or more backup hosts if there are any indications of interrupted communication.

15 claims: 4 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A method for maintaining network data distribution, comprising:establishing (410) connections between a host (200) and a plurality of clients (310A-D), wherein data exchanged between the host (200) and each of the plurality of clients (310A-D) is acknowledged upon receipt;negotiating (430) backup viability of a first client (310A) from the plurality of clients (310A-D);and transmitting host information to the first client (310A), wherein the first client (310A) establishes connections (330) to all other clients (310B-D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D) based on at least the host information, and the first client (310A) receives data from a second client (310D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D) if communication between the host (200) and the second client (310D) is interrupted.
  2. 3
The method of claims 1 or 2, further comprising polling the plurality of clients to determine connectivity between the host (200) and each of the plurality of clients (310A-D) and wherein the interrupted communication is indicated by results of the polling.
  3. 4
The method of any of claims 1-3, further comprising sending an indication from the host (200) to each of the plurality of clients (310A-D) concerning the interrupted communication between the host (200) and the second client (310D).
  4. 5
The method of any of claims 1-4, further comprising terminating a connection between the host (200) and the second client (310D) based on the interrupted communication.
  5. 6
The method of any of claims 1-5, wherein negotiating (430) the backup viability of the first client (310A) comprises determining a bandwidth of the first client (310A) and/or wherein negotiating (430) the backup viability of the first client comprises determining whether the first client (310A) is capable of connecting to each of the other clients (310B-D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D).
  6. 7
The method of any of claims 1-6, wherein transmitting host information to the first client (310A) comprises transmitting an application providing the host information concerning each of the other clients (310B-D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D).
  7. 8
The method of any of claims 1-7, further comprising:negotiating backup viability of a third client from the plurality of clients (310A-D);and transmitting host information to the third client such that the third client connects to all other clients from the plurality of clients (310A-D) based on at least the host information and the third client receives data from the second client (310D) if communication between the first client (310A) and the second client (310D) is interrupted.
  8. 10
A system for maintaining network data distribution, comprising:a host (200) configured to connect to a plurality of clients (310A-D), wherein the host (200) receives and acknowledges the receipt of data from each of the plurality of clients (310A-D);a first client (310A) configured to receive host information, wherein the first client (310A) connects to all other clients (310B-D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D) based on at least the host information;and a second client (310D) configured to transmit data to the first client (310A) if communication between the host (200) and the second client (310D) is interrupted.
  9. 12
A computing device for maintaining data distribution in networks, comprising:an acknowledgement module (220) configured to transmit a reply acknowledging data received from a client;a negotiation module (230) configured to negotiate backup viability of a first client (310A);and a backup application module (250) configured to transmit an application providing host information to the first client (310A), such that the first client (310A) connects to all other clients (310B-D) from the plurality of clients (310A-D) based on at least the host information and receives data from a second client (310D).
  10. 15
A computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program, the program being executable by a processor to perform a method according to one of the claims 1-9.
