Method and apparatus for coating a stent

Abstract

A method and device, for use in an operating theater just prior to implantation, for selectively applying a medical device coating to an implantable medical device (2). Disclosed is a device (1) for use with a stent deployed on a catheter balloon configured to apply a medical coating of a desired thickness to the surface of the stent (2) only. A drop-on demand inkjet printing system (34) in association with an optical scanning device (32) is described. The device is further configured to apply a plurality of layered coats, each layered coat being of a different coating material, and if appropriate, different thickness and to coat a portion of the medical device (2) as a function of its geometric configuration. The coating is applied by moving an applicator (34) over the device in a path that is independent of the deposited coating pattern.

  1. 1
A method of coating a medical device, the method comprising:optically scanning (1902) a medical device and capturing a plurality of views of the medical device;generating (1906) a digital representation of the medical device from the plurality of views;processing (1908) the generated representation to generate a two-dimensional topology of the medical device;determining (1910) a first plurality of reference locations on the generated topology;determining (1912) a second plurality of locations as a function of the first plurality of locations, the second plurality of locations being shifted away from the first plurality of locations and corresponding to locations on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed;generating (1914) physical coordinates corresponding to the second plurality of locations, the physical coordinates defining physical points on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed;and depositing (1920) at least one drop of coating material on at least one location in the second plurality of locations.
  2. 6
A system for coating a medical device, the system comprising:means (32) for optically scanning a medical device and capturing a plurality of views of the medical device;means (1402) for generating a digital representation of the medical device from the plurality of views;means (1402) for processing the generated representation to generate a two-dimensional topology of the medical device;means (1402) for determining a first plurality of reference locations on the generated topology;means (1402) for determining a second plurality of locations as a function of the first plurality of locations, the second plurality of locations being shifted away from the first plurality of locations and corresponding to locations on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed;means (1402) for generating physical coordinates corresponding to the second plurality of locations, the physical coordinates defining physical points on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed;and means (34) for depositing at least one drop of coating material on at least one location in the second plurality of locations.
  3. 11
A system for coating a medical device, the system comprising:at least one optical scanning device (32) for optically scanning a medical device and capturing a plurality of views of the medical device;a control system (1402) including instructions for generating a digital representation of the medical device from the plurality of views, processing the generated representation to generate a two-dimensional topology of the medical device, determining a first plurality of reference locations on the generated topology, determining a second plurality of locations as a function of the first plurality of locations, the second plurality of locations being shifted away from the first plurality of locations and corresponding to locations on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed, and generating physical coordinates corresponding to the second plurality of locations, the physical coordinates defining physical points on the medical device at which at least one drop of a coating material is to be placed;and at least one applicator head (34) for depositing at least one drop of coating material on at least one location in the second plurality of locations.
