A whipstock

Abstract

A whipstock with a longitudinal axis includes a tapered face surface, at least a part of which is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis, for guiding a milling head as the milling head passes from a top end to a bottom end of the face surface. A deflecting arrangement protrudes from the face surface and has first and second deflection surfaces. At least a part of each of the deflection surfaces is raised above the face surface, and each of the first and second deflection surfaces are inclined at a greater angle with respect to the longitudinal axis than the face surface in the region of the deflection arrangement. The first deflection surface is located closer to the top end of the face surface than the second deflection surface.

  1. 1
A whipstock (1) having a longitudinal axis and comprising:a tapered face surface (39), at least part of which is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis, for guiding a milling head (7)as the milling head (7) passes from a top end to a bottom end of the face surface (39);and a deflection arrangement (4) having first and second deflection surfaces (46, 47), each of the first and second deflection surfaces being inclined at a greater angle with respect to the longitudinal axis than the face surface (39) in the region of the deflection arrangement (4), wherein the first deflection surface (46) is located closer to the top end of the face surface than the second deflection surface (47), characterised in that the deflection arrangement (4) protrudes from the face surface (39) and at least a part of each of the deflection surfaces is raised above the face surface (39).
  2. 7
A whipstock (1) according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein a space is provided between the first and second deflection surfaces.
  3. 13
A method of guiding a milling head (7) to form a cutout in the casing (45) of a bore, comprising the steps of:providing a whipstock (1) having a longitudinal axis and comprising: a tapered face surface (39), at least part of which is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis, for guiding a milling head (7) as the milling head (7) passes from a top end to a bottom end of the face surface (39);and a deflection arrangement (4) having first and second deflection surfaces (46, 47), each of which is inclined at a greater angle with respect to the longitudinal axis than the face surface (39) in the region of the deflection arrangement, wherein the first deflection surface (46) is located closer to the top end of the face surface (39) than the second deflection surface (47) ;locating the whipstock (1) in the existing bore so that the top end thereof is uppermost;providing a milling arrangement comprising a milling head (7), at least a part of the profile of the milling head (7) being shaped so that, when the milling head (7) is guided by the face surface of the whipstock (1) during normal use thereof, the part of the profile is substantially parallel with the at least one of the deflection surfaces when the part of the profile meets the at least one of the deflection surfaces;and driving the milling assembly so that the milling head is guided by the face surface (39) as the milling head (7) passes from a top end to a bottom end of the face surface (39), and so that the milling head (7) is deflected towards the casing (45) of the existing bore by the first deflection surface and deflected towards the casing (45) of the existing bore again by the second deflection surface, characterised in that the step of providing a whipstock (1) comprises the step of providing a whipstock (1) in which the deflection arrangement (4) protrudes from the face surface (39) and at least a part of each of the deflection surface (46, 47) is raised above the face surface (39).
