Enhanced uplink operation in soft handover

Abstract

A method and system for an enhanced uplink (EU) operation in a wireless communication system during soft handover are disclosed. The system comprises a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), at least two Node-Bs, and a radio network controller (RNC). One Node-B may be designated as a primary Node-B, and the primary Node-B may control EU operation during soft handover including uplink scheduling and hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ). Soft buffer corruption is avoided during soft handover by controlling H-ARQ by the primary Node-B. Alternatively, an RNC may control EU operation during soft handover including H-ARQ. In this case, an RNC generates final acknowledge/non-acknowledge (ACK/NACK) decision based on the error check results of the Node-Bs.

  1. 1
A method for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the method comprising:sending a packet to a Node-B via at least two cells controlled by the Node-B;receiving multiple acknowledgement/non-acknowledgements, ACK/NACKs, from the Node-B via the at least two cells;combining the multiple ACK/NACKs;and delivering the combined ACK/NACK to a higher layer.
  2. 2
A wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the WTRU comprising:a transmitter for sending a packet to a Node-B via at least two cells controlled by the Node-B;a receiver for receiving multiple acknowledgement/non-acknowledgements, ACK/NACKs, from the Node-B via the at least two cells and combining the ACK/NACKs;and an H-ARQ entity for implementing H-ARQ operation based on the combined ACK/NACK.
  3. 3
A method for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the method comprising:a Node-B receiving, via at least two cells controlled by the Node-B, a data packet transmitted from a wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, via an enhanced uplink, EU, channel;the Node-B combining the data packet received from the cells;the Node-B decoding the combined data packet;and the Node-B sending, via the cells, an acknowledgement, ACK, to the WTRU if the combined data packet is successfully decoded and a non-acknowledgement, NACK, if the combined data packet is not successfully decoded.
  4. 5
A Node-B for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the Node-B comprising:an H-ARQ entity for performing H-ARQ operation;a receiver for receiving a data packet from a wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, via an enhanced uplink, EU, channel through at least two cells controlled by the Node-B;and a decoder for combining the data packet received from the cells and decoding the combined data packet, wherein the H-ARQ entity sends, via the cells, an acknowledgement, ACK, to the WTRU if the combined data packet is successfully decoded and a non-acknowledgement, NACK, if the combined data packet is not successfully decoded.
  5. 7
A method for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the method comprising:generating a data packet;sending the data packet to at least two Node-Bs implementing H-ARQ;and sending a retransmission sequence number associated with the data packet to the Node-Bs via a physical control channel.
  6. 8
A wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, for operating hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, the WTRU comprising:a transmitter for sending a data packet to at least two Node-Bs;and an H-ARQ entity for sending a retransmission sequence number associated with the data packet to the Node-Bs via a physical control channel.
  7. 9
A method for supporting hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, operation, the method comprising:receiving uplink performance statistics from a plurality of Node-Bs;selecting a primary Node-B among the Node-Bs based on the uplink performance statistics;and notifying the Node-Bs regarding the selected primary Node-B.
  8. 11
A radio network controller, RNC, for supporting hybrid automatic repeat request, H-ARQ, operation, the RNC comprising:a transceiver;and a controlling entity configured to select a primary Node-B based on uplink performance statistics received from a plurality of Node-Bs with respect to a particular wireless transmit/receive unit, WTRU, and notify the Node-Bs regarding the selected primary Node-B.
