Security system based on input shortcuts for a computer device

Abstract

A method of activating security functions on a computer device, for example a mobile communications device. The computer device includes a device state that may be realized by a first user input or a second user input. The method includes designating the first user input to realize the device state as a security rule having an associated security function, detecting realization of the device state, and activating the associated security function if the device state was realized by way of the second user input rather than the first user input. For example, the first user input may be a shortcut input, and the second user input may be a conventional or normal input.

  1. 1
A method of activating security functions on a computer device (10), the computer device (10) having a device state that may be realized by way of a first user input or a second user input, the method comprising:defining a security rule (116), wherein the security rule (116) includes realization of the device state by way of the first user input;designating a security function (112) associated with the security rule (116);detecting realization of the device state;and activating the associated security function (112) if the device state was realized by way of the second user input instead of the first user input.
  2. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the predetermined security function (112) includes the functions of locking a present application (222b), locking the device (222b), logging user actions, deleting stored information (222d), or entering a honeypot mode (222e).
  3. 5
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the computer device (10) is a communications device for connection to a communications network (50).
  4. 7
The method of any preceding claim, further comprising a step of temporarily buffering input received via said user input interface, and wherein said step of activating includes reading said buffered input to detect receipt of said second user input rather than said first user input.
  5. 11
A computer device (10), comprising:a controller (38) for controlling the operation of the device (10);a user input interface (32, 28) for inputting information to the controller (38);a display (22) coupled to the controller (38);a software module (100) executable by the controller (38) and configured to produce a device state that may be realized by way of a first user input or a second user input;and a security module (109) executable by the controller and configured to define a security rule (116), wherein the security rue (116) comprises realization of the device state by way of the first user input, designate a security function (112) associated with the security rule (116), detect realization of the device state, and activate the associated security function (112) if the device state was realized by way of the second user input instead of the first user input.
  6. 14
The device of any one of claims 11 to 13, wherein the first user input is one of a conventional user input and a shortcut user input, and the second input is the other of the conventional user input and the shortcut user input.
  7. 15
The device of any one of claims 11 to 14, further comprising an operating system and a software application system, and wherein the security module is implemented partly by the software application system and partly by the operating system such that the software application system is configured to define the security rule (116), designate the security function (112), detect realization of the device state, determine whether the device state was realized by way of the first user input of the second user input, and communicate to the operating system that the second user input was input rather than the first user input, and such that the operating system is configured to activate the associated security function (112).
  8. 16
The device of any one of claims 11 to 15, wherein the computer device (10) is a communications device for connection to a network (50).
  9. 17
The device of any one of claims 11 to 16, wherein the user input interface includes a user configurable options interface for receiving user input selecting any one of the first user input, the second user input, the security function, and the device function.
  10. 18
The device of any one of claims 11 to 17, wherein the user input interface comprises at least one of a keyboard, touchscreen, keypad, trackwheel, trackball, and mouse.
  11. 19
The device of any one of claims 11 to 18, wherein said security module (109) further comprises a detection component (110) configured to generate the security rule and which is configured to detect receipt of the first user input for realizing the device state, identify the second user input as an alternative user input for realizing the device state, and generate the security rule (116), wherein the security rule (116) associates a security violation with receipt of the second user input rather than the first user input for realizing the device state.
  12. 20
A computer readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor of a computer device for performing the method claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10.
