User interfaces and methods for manipulating and viewing digital documents

Abstract

A computer device having a system for simulating tactile control over a document includes a a velocity detector for determining a velocity vector associated with pointer movement across a display screen. In response to a command for dragging a document, the velocity vector is employed in redrawing the document in a series of pictures that portray the document as moving on the display screen such that a user may drag a document and then release the pointer from the document, whereupon either: the page continues to move in a direction established by the velocity detector until the user indicates that the document is to stop moving; or the velocity decreases by a page inertia until it reaches zero velocity. A method for providing interface tools for manipulating a document on a display provides a tool that allows the user to adjust the prominence of selected portions of a displayed content document file in a displayed screen document, the selected portions comprising links or highlighted text.

  1. 1
A computer device having a system for simulating tactile control over a document, comprising a processor, memory, and a display screen, system code stored within the memory and adapted to be executed by the processor, said system code for providing a digital representation of a document including data content and a page structure representative of a page layout of the document, a rendering engine for rendering at least a portion of the page layout of the digital representation on the display screen, a screen monitor for monitoring the display screen to detect movement of a pointer across an image presented on the display screen, an interface process for processing detected pointer movements to detect pointer movements representative of commands to alter the rendered page structure of the digital representation, said commands including a command that may be employed by a user for dragging a document within a viewing area of the display screen, and a navigation module responsive to the interface process for changing the rendered portion of the page layout, wherein altering the rendered portion of the page layout allows a user to navigate through the digital representation of the document; characterised by :a velocity detector for determining a velocity vector associated with pointer movement across the display screen whereby, in response to said command for dragging a document, the velocity vector is employed in redrawing the document in a series of pictures that portray the document as moving on the display screen such that a user may drag a document and then release the pointer from the document, whereupon either: the page continues to move in a direction established by the velocity detector until the user indicates that the document is to stop moving;or the velocity decreases by a page inertia until it reaches zero velocity.
  2. 4
The device according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the display screen comprises a touch-sensitive display screen, and the screen monitor monitors the touch-sensitive display screen for detecting movement across a surface of the touch sensitive display screen.
  3. 5
A method for providing interface tools for manipulating a document on a display, comprising processing an input byte stream representative of the document to generate a content document file representative of an internal representation of the content, providing a tool document file providing an internal representation of a document providing an image that is representative of a graphical tool, providing tool code associated with the tool document file and capable of processing the content document file to create an internal representation of the content that presents the content in a manner that achieves a display effect associated with the tool, and processing the content document file, the tool document file, and the processed internal representation to generate a screen document for display on the display in a manner that portrays the display effect;wherein the tool allows the user to adjust the prominence of selected portions of the content document file in the displayed screen document, the selected portions comprising links or highlighted text.
  4. 8
A method according to any one of claims 5 to 7, wherein the prominence of the selected portions is adjusted by maintaining the transparency of the selected portions while the transparency of the remaining portions of document is varied by use of the tool.
