Drive mechanism for drug delivery device

Abstract

The invention relates to a drive mechanism for use in a drug delivery device comprising: a housing (2") having a helical thread, a rack (6") fixed with respect to the housing (2"); a toothed gear (22") to rotate against the rack (6") a dose dial sleeve (36") having a helical thread engaged with the helical thread of the said housing (2"); a drive sleeve (18") releasibly connected to the said dose dial sleeve; and a clutch means located between the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18"). When the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18") are coupled, both are allowed to rotate with respect to the housing (2"). When the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18") are de-coupled, rotation of the dose dial sleeve (36") with respect to the housing (2") is allowed, whilst rotation of the drive sleeve (18") with respect to the housing (2") is not allowed, whereby axial movement of the drive sleeve (18") is allowed so that a force is transferred in the longitudinal direction to the proximal end of the drug delivery device.

  1. 1
A drive mechanism for use in a drug delivery device comprising:a housing (2") having a helical thread, a rack (6") fixed with respect to the housing (2");a toothed gear (22") to rotate against the rack (6") a dose dial sleeve (36") having a helical thread engaged with the helical thread of the said housing (2");a drive sleeve (18") releasibly connected to the said dose dial sleeve;and a clutch means located between the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18");characterized in that , a) when the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18") are coupled, both are allowed to rotate with respect to the housing (2");and b) when the dose dial sleeve (36") and the drive sleeve (18") are de-coupled, rotation of the dose dial sleeve (36") with respect to the housing (2") is allowed, whilst rotation of the drive sleeve (18") with respect to the housing (2") is not allowed, whereby axial movement of the drive sleeve (18") is allowed so that a force is transferred in the longitudinal direction to the proximal end of the drug delivery device.
  2. 4
A drive mechanism according to any of claims 1 to 3, comprising a piston rod (32") adapted to operate through the housing (2") and transfer the said force in the said longitudinal direction to the proximal end of the drug delivery device.
  3. 6
An assembly for use in a drug delivery device comprising the drive mechanism as defined in any of claims 1 to 5.
  4. 9
The drug delivery device according to any of claims 7 to 8, which is an injector-type device.
  5. 10
The drug delivery device according to any of claims 7 to 9, which comprises a needle.
  6. 11
The drug delivery device as defined in any of claims 7 to 10 comprising a cartridge (4") from which a medicinal product may be dispensed.
