  1. 1
A method (300; 400) of operating an initiator wireless device (210), in order to initiate switching of the initiator wireless device (210) and a number of other wireless devices (212, 214, 216), to a new special talkgroup on a common radio channel (205), the method (300; 400) comprising:receiving (305;405), at an initiator wireless device (210), a user initiated input to initiate a new special talkgroup;responsive to receiving (305;405) the user initiated input, the initiator wireless device (210) automatically transmitting (310;410) to a radio control manager (230) an initiate switching message including location coordinates for the initiator wireless device (210);receiving (345;445), at the initiator wireless device (210) via a message transmitted from the radio control manager (230), an instruction to switch to a common radio channel (205) in order to group or regroup the initiator wireless device (210) and the number of other wireless devices (212, 214, 216) to the new special talkgroup;responsive to receiving (345;445) the instruction, the initiator wireless device (210) automatically switching (345;445) to the common radio channel (205).
  2. 2
A method (300; 400) of operating a radio control manager to switch a number of wireless devices to a new special talkgroup on a common radio channel (205), the method (300; 400) comprising:receiving (315;415) an initiate switching message, including location based information, from an initiator wireless device (210) requesting initiation of a new special talkgroup;responsive to receiving the initiate switching message, automatically broadcasting (325;425) a request for location coordinates message to other wireless devices (212, 214, 216);receiving (327;435) respective location coordinates from each of the other wireless devices (212, 214, 216);automatically determining (330;435) a distance between each of the other wireless devices (212, 214, 216) and the initiator wireless device (210);determining (337;440) which of the other wireless devices (212, 214, 216) are within a predetermined distance of the initiator wireless device (210);and transmitting (340;440) an instruction to the initiator wireless device (210) and each of the other wireless devices (212, 214, 216) determined to be within the predetermined distance to switch to the common radio channel (205) in order to group or regroup the initiator wireless device (210) and the number of other wireless devices (212, 214, 216) to a new special talkgroup.
  3. 3
A method (400) of operating a wireless device in order to switch to a new special talkgroup on a common radio channel (205), the method (400) comprising:receiving (427), at a wireless device (212, 214, 216), a broadcast request (425) for location coordinates from a radio control manager (230);responsive to receiving (427) the broadcast request (425), the wireless device (212, 214, 216) automatically transmitting (430) location coordinates for the wireless device (212, 214, 216) to the radio control manager (230);responsive to a determination by the radio control manager (230) that the wireless device (212, 214, 216) is within the predetermined distance of an initiating wireless device (210), the wireless device receiving (445) an instruction to switch to a common radio channel (205) in order to group or regroup the initiating wireless device (210) and the wireless device (212, 214, 216) to a new special talkgroup;responsive to receiving the instruction from the radio control manager (230), the wireless device (212, 214, 216) automatically switching (445) to the common radio channel (205).
  4. 4
The method (300;400) as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, wherein the common radio channel (205) is a professional mobile radio (PMR) radio channel.
  5. 5
The method (300;400) as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, wherein the location coordinates are global positioning system (GPS) coordinates.
  6. 6
The method (300;400) as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, wherein communications (215) with the radio control manager (230) use a cellular network (220).
  7. 7
The method (300;400) as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, wherein communications (208) with the radio control manager (230) use a PMR network (207).
  8. 8
The method (300;400) as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, wherein communications with the radio control manager (230) use short message service (SMS) messages.
