14 claims: 11 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
Isolated cardiac stem cells for use in treating a vasculature disorder by forming large coronary vessels or arteries in vivo in a patient, wherein the cardiac stem cells are activated by exposure to hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and/or insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) prior to administration to the patient.
  2. 3
Isolated cardiac stem cells for use in treating myocardial infarction or myocardial ischemia by generating myocardium and/or myocardial cells in a patient, wherein the cardiac stem cells are activated by exposure to HGF and/or IGF-I prior to administration to the patient.
  3. 4
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the cardiac stem cells are isolated from myocardial tissue and expanded in culture.
  4. 5
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 4, which are autologous.
  5. 6
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 5, which are delivered via a catheter system.
  6. 8
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the activated cardiac stem cells undergo a reduced rate of apoptosis as compared to non-activated cardiac stem cells and wherein said cells are activated by exposure to HGF and IGF-1 prior to administration to the patient.
  7. 9
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the activated cardiac stem cells express one or more markers selected from the group consisting of connexin 43, N-cadherin, E-cadherin, and L-selectin and wherein said cells are activated by exposure to HGF and IGF-1 prior to administration to the patient.
  8. 10
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 9, which are delivered via an intramyocardial, intraarterial, transendocardial, or transepicardial injection.
  9. 11
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the cardiac stem cells are c-kit positive.
  10. 13
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the cardiac stem cells are lineage negative.
  11. 14
The cardiac stem cells of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the cardiac stem cells are human.
