Authenticated change of media provided over a DSL connection

Abstract

A method and system for fast channel changes of media that is provided by carriers over an xDSL connection to a hom. Each customer's subscriber information is stored at the DSLAM that supports the xDSL connection to the home. Also, each DSLAM supports multicast protocols so that only one instance of a channel is provided on the core network regardless of how many customers have requested access to the channel.

15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A method for enabling access of a subscriber terminal (204) served by an access node (206A-206C), wherein the access node (206A-206C) is connected to a core network (208) carrying a plurality of media channels and wherein the subscriber terminal is connected to the access node (206A-206C) over a respective local loop data connection, characterized in that the access node (206A-206C) is enabled with multicast capabilities and multiple subscribers authorized to access the same media channel are granted multicast access to a single instance of that channel in response to a subscriber request to access a media channel carried by the core network.
  2. 5
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the local loop data connection is an xDSL connection established over a telephone line.
  3. 6
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the media channel carries video, IP data, text, voice.
  4. 7
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the access node is a multicast enabled DSLAM, equipped with an authorization module for authorizing subscriber access to the media channel.
  5. 8
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the request is a channel change request specifying the media channel.
  6. 9
An access node (206A-206C) for enabling a plurality of subscriber terminals served by the access node 206A-206C) over respective local loop data connections to access data provided on media channels available on a core network (208), comprising a media channel access module (808) for communicating with the core network through a network interface (806);a subscriber interface (802) for communicating with a subscriber terminal over a local loop data connection;a system controller (812) for controlling operation of the access node (206A-206C), characterized in that the access node (206A-206C) is enabled with multicast capabilities whereby multiple subscribers authorized to access the same media channel are granted multicast access to a single instance of that channel in response to a subscriber request to access a media channel carried by the core network (208).
  7. 13
A system for enabling a plurality of subscriber terminals to access data provided on media channels available on a core network (208), comprising a plurality of access nodes (206A-206C) connected to the core network, and a plurality of local loop data connections between the subscriber terminals (204) and the access nodes (206A-206C), wherein each access node comprises a media channel access module (808) communicating with the core network through a network interface (806);a subscriber interface (802) communicating with a subscriber terminal over a local loop data connection;a system controller (812) for controlling operation of the access node (206A-206C), characterized in that each access node (206A-206C) is enabled with multicast capabilities whereby multiple subscribers authorized to access the same media channel are granted multicast access to a single instance of that channel in response to a subscriber request to access a media channel carried by the core network.
  8. 15
A device for enabling fast access to at least one channel over an xDSL connection, comprising:(a) means for employing at least one multicast enabled Digital Subscriber Line Access and Multiplexer (DSLAM) configured to authenticate at least one subscriber locally and to enable access to at least one channel on a core network, wherein the subscriber is coupled to the core network (208) by the xDSL connection;(b) at a multicast enabled DSLAM, employing means for receiving a request for at least one channel from the subscriber, wherein the receiving DSLAM serves a local xDSL connection for the subscriber;(c) means for employing information stored at the receiving DSLAM to determine locally whether the subscriber is authorized to access the requested channel;and (d) if the subscriber is determined to be authorized to access the requested channel, employing the DSLAM to provide access locally to the requested channel on the core network, wherein the core network establishes a single instance of each channel in advance of selection by at least one of the subscribers.
