A vehicle occupant protection apparatus comprising:an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (70, 12b) having a deflated condition and an inflated condition to which said vehicle occupant protection device (70, 12b) is deployed by inflation fluid;a support member (20b, 80) having a first vent opening (94, 44b) for enabling flow of inflation fluid away from said protection device (70, 12b);a vent member (100) movable relative to said first vent opening (94, 44b) between a first condition in which said vent member (100) does not close said first vent opening (94, 44b) that enables flow of inflation fluid away from said protection device (70, 12b) and a second condition in which said vent member (100) at least partially blocks said flow of inflation fluid through said first vent opening (94, 44b) and away from said protection device (70, 12b);a tether (110) connected for movement with said protection device (70, 12b) as said protection device (70, 12b) is deployed;said tether (110) being associated with said vent member (100) and causing said vent member (100) to move relative to said first vent opening (94, 44b) from the first condition to the second condition as said protection device (70, 12b) is deployed, wherein said vent member (100) is a door which is configured to be pulled through a vent retainer (98, 142) relative to said first vent opening (94, 44b) between the first and second conditions, wherein said tether (110) includes a first tether end portion (112) connected for movement with said protection device (70) at a first location and a second tether end portion (114) connected for movement with said protection device (70) at a second location spaced apart from said first location, the tether (110) thus being operative to cause the door (100) to move so as to close the vent opening (94), only in response to movement of the first and second tether end portions (112, 114) away from the door (100) when the combined distances between said first tether end portion (112) of said tether (110) and said door (100) and between said second tether end portion (114) of said tether (110) and said door (100) are substantially equal to the length of said tether (110) between said first and second tether end portions (112, 114).
