  1. 1
A method of utilizing an object-based protocol for communicating between a master device (212) and a slave device (210), the method comprising:facilitating a communications link with said slave device, said slave device including, (1) one or more objects (242, 246) that are respectively associated with a set of corresponding object sequence indicators (312, 830, 846);and (2) a current maximum-sequence-value indicator (248, 250) that indicates the largest object sequence indicator on said slave device;communicating a request for information about objects on the slave device (210) based on a former maximum-sequence-value indicator, which indicates when the slave device (210) formerly communicated with the master device (212);receiving information (243A, 243B, 243C) related to objects that satisfy said request based on the former maximum-sequence-value indicator (826) and on the object sequence indicators (312, 830, 846), characterized in that the object sequence indicator is a value within a set of values that for any two values, a later value is at least as extreme as a preceding value and wherein utilizing the former maximum-sequence-value indicator in connection with the object sequence indicators includes determining first a set of objects whose corresponding object sequence indicator exceeds said former maximum-sequence-value indicator.
  2. 6
One or more tangible machine-readable media (211A, 211B) having a set of machine-readable instructions embodied thereon that when processed by a slave device (210) cause it to perform a method of exposing information (243A, 243B, 243C) about a set of data objects (242) to one or more requesting applications (234, 236, 238) running on a master device (212), the method comprising:receiving a plurality of independent object-information requests (241A, 241B, 241C) from the requesting applications (234, 236, 238), each of the object-information requests being for information about at least a portion of the data objects in the set (242) of data objects;identifying from each request (241A, 241B, 241C) a respective former maximum-sequence-value indicator (248) that indicates when the slave device (210) last communicated with a respective requesting application (234, 236, or 238);and utilizing previously stored object sequence indicators (516) in connection with the respective former maximum-sequence-value indicator (248) to satisfy each of the plurality of object-information requests (241A, 241B, 241C) such that each requesting application receives information (243A, 243B, 243C) about only those data objects whose corresponding object sequence indicator satisfies criteria with respect to the maximum- sequence-value indicator (248).
