A method for controlling an optical scanner and an optical scanning apparatus

Abstract

A method and apparatus are described for determining if an optical scanner is moving. In one embodiment the method for sensing movement of an optical scanner comprises the steps of providing an oscillating system comprising a flexible member, a magnet coupled to the flexible member, a coil disposed within a magnetically effective distance from the magnet, and sense circuitry coupled to the coil; generating a first electrical signal from the oscillations of the flexible member; amplifying the generated electrical signal; analyzing the first electrical signal to determine if the generated signal is indicative of movement of the optical scanner.

  1. 1
A method for controlling an optical scanner having a movable oscillating element and an electrically operated drive coupled to move the oscillating element over a periodic path, wherein the oscillating element is mounted resiliently relative to a housing and the housing is subject to manual movement, the method comprising the steps of:- providing a sense signal to the electronically operated drive, the sense signal representing active movement of the oscillating element in the periodic path;- enabling the electronically operated drive in an active state wherein the oscillating element is repetitively moved over the periodic path, and disabling the electronically operated drive in a sleep state wherein movement of the oscillating system dissipates;- detecting said movement of oscillating element when in the sleep state, and switching from the sleep state to the active state in response to detection of said movement.
  2. 10
An optical scanning apparatus, comprising:- a housing;- a flipper assembly comprising a flexible member with a fixed end affixed to the housing, the flexible member carrying a reflector spaced from the fixed end and a weight spaced from the fixed end, the flipper assembly being configured to oscillate resiliently relative to the fixed end when perturbed, for varying an angle of the reflector during periodic scanning;- a drive circuit comprising at least one sensing circuit producing a signal varying with motion of the flipper assembly, and a driver operable to move the flipper assembly so as to maintain the motion of the flipper assembly;- a control circuit operable to enable and disable the drive circuit, wherein the control circuit defines an active state during which the drive circuit oscillates the flipper assembly and a sleep state during which the drive circuit is disabled, thereby permitting oscillation of the flipper assembly to cease;- wherein the control circuit is responsive to the sense signal when the control circuit is in the sleep state, for switching into the active state and commencing oscillation of the flipper assembly via the drive circuit.
