Method and System for eliminating external piercing in nc cutting of nested parts

Abstract

This invention pertains to machinery and methods of cutting a workpiece into at least two parts, the method comprising the steps of: identifying at least a first part and a second part each by a respective profile on the workpiece; moving a cutting tool through the workpiece along a first profile corresponding to the first part to create a first part from the workpiece; while creating the first part, moving the cutting tool away from an outer boundary of the first profile and thereby creating an opportunity in the workpiece with the cutting tool; after creating the first part, moving the cutting tool to the opportunity; moving the cutting tool through the workpiece from the opportunity to a second profile corresponding to the second part; and moving the cutting tool through the workpiece along the second profile to create the second part from the workpiece.

19 claims: 11 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method of cutting a workpiece into at least two parts, the method comprising the steps of:identifying at least a first part and a second part each by a respective profile on the workpiece;moving a cutting tool through the workpiece along a first profile corresponding to the first part to create a first part from the workpiece;while creating the first part, moving the cutting tool away from an outer boundary of the first profile and thereby creating an opportunity in the workpiece with the cutting tool;after creating the first part, moving the cutting tool to the opportunity;moving the cutting tool through the workpiece from the opportunity to a second profile corresponding to the second part;and moving the cutting tool through the workpiece along the second profile to create the second part from the workpiece.
  2. 3
The method of any one of claims 1-2, wherein:the first profile has a first point that is adjacent the second profile, the first point being at least as close to the second profile as are all other points along the first profile;and the step of moving the cutting tool away from the first profile and thereby creating an opportunity with the cutting tool includes the step of moving the cutting tool away from the first profile at or adjacent the first point and thereby creating an opportunity adjacent the first point with the cutting tool.
  3. 4
The method of any one of claims 1-3, further comprising the step of calculating a position for at least one opportunity so as to reduce movement of the cutting tool or minimize additional movement of the cutting tool and reduce or minimize cutting during machining of the workpiece.
  4. 5
The method of any one of claims 1-4, further comprising the step of stepping away the cutting tool from the first profile while creating the opportunity.
  5. 8
The method of any one of claims 6-7, wherein the opportunity profile is stepped away from the first part profile.
  6. 9
The method of any one of claims 1-8, further comprising the step of arranging the respective profiles on the workpiece to maximize a number of parts that can be cut from the workpiece, wherein especially a numerical control unit causes the cutting tool to move as described.
  7. 14
A method of cutting a workpiece into at least two parts, the method comprising the steps of:identifying at least a first part and a second part each by a respective profile on the workpiece;moving a cutting tool through the workpiece along a first profile corresponding to the first part to create a first part from the workpiece;while creating the first part, moving the cutting tool away from a boundary of the first profile into scrap material of the workpiece nested within the first part and thereby creating an opportunity in the workpiece with the cutting tool;moving the cutting tool through the workpiece along the second profile to create a second part;after creating the second part, moving the cutting tool in a reverse direction along the opportunity to resume cutting of the first part;and moving the cutting tool through the workpiece along an uncut remainder of the first profile to create the first part from the workpiece.
  8. 15
A computer readable medium having a program for executing a method defined in any one of the previous claims.
  9. 16
A machine for cutting at least two pieces from a workpiece, the machine comprising:a cutting tool;a platform;a drive assembly connected to at least one of the cutting tool and the platform to move the cutting tool relative to the platform;a programmable control unit programmed to control the movement of the cutting tool relative to the platform along a path;and programming for determining the path so that the path includes a first profile corresponding to a first of the two pieces, a profile of an opportunity extending from the first profile, and a second profile corresponding to a second of the two pieces, wherein the path diverts from the first profile to the profile of the opportunity and then returns to the first profile, and wherein after completing the first profile the path proceeds from the opportunity to the second profile.
  10. 18
The machine of any one of claims 16-17, wherein the path steps away from the first profile while creating the opportunity, and/or wherein the opportunity further comprises an edge start facility for starting cutting of the second profile from an edge of the second profile formed as part of the opportunity.
  11. 19
The machine of any one of claims 16-18, wherein the cutting tool has a kerf radius and the first profile is at least as close as four times the kerf radius to the second profile.
