18 claims: 5 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
Method for supporting a plurality of applications (54) in a multicarrier modulation transceiver (10, 14) over a communication channel (18), wherein the method comprises:defining a plurality of application profiles (34, 50), each application profile (34, 50) corresponding to a unique set of one or more fixed data rate or variable data rate applications (54) and specifying at least one transmission or reception parameter for each application (54) in that unique application (34, 50) set for transmitting or receiving information associated with that application (54) over the communication channel (18);selecting, in response to a change in a set of currently active applications (54), a second application profile (34, 50) of the plurality of application profiles (34, 50), wherein the second application profile (34, 50) corresponds to the changed set of currently active applications (54);and transitioning to transmitting or receiving information according to the second application profile (34, 50), without interrupting communication between the transceiver (10, 14) and another transceiver (10, 14).
  2. 7
Method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the method further comprises one or more of:transmitting at least one of the application profiles (34, 50) to the other transceiver (10, 14) over the communication channel (18) without performing a full initialization of the transceivers (10, 14);performing a full initialization of the transceivers (10, 14) to exchange one of the application profiles (34, 50) with the other transceiver (10, 14);and generating one of the application profiles (34, 50) upon an initial occurrence of a unique set of active applications, and associating the generated application profile (34, 50) with that unique application set.
  3. 8
Method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized either in that the method further comprises locally generating, by the transceiver (10, 14), at least one of the transmission parameters for one of the application profiles (34, 50);or the transceiver (10, 14) is preconfigured with the application profiles (34, 50).
  4. 9
Method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in either:that the at least one transmission or reception parameter specified for each application in one of the application profiles (34, 50) is at least one of a transmission or reception data rate, subchannels allocated for downstream and upstream transmission, a number of bits allocated to each of the subchannels, performance margin, fine gain adjustments for each of the subchannels, interleave depth, a minimum and a maximum QAM constellation size, a length of a cyclic prefix, a codeword size, a framing mode, and trellis code, or that the first stored application profile (34, 50) characterizes a transmission or reception of signals associated with a web browsing application, wherein the second stored application profile (34, 50) characterizes concurrent transmission or reception of signals associated with a voice telephony application and the Web browsing application.
  5. 10
A multicarrier modulation transceiver (10, 14) for supporting a plurality of applications (54) over a communication channel (18), the transceiver (10, 14) comprising a transmitter (22, 38) and a receiver (26, 42), the transceiver (10, 14) configured to:define a plurality of application profiles (34, 50), each application profile (34, 50) corresponding to a unique set of one or more fixed data rate or variable data rate applications (54) and specifying at least one transmission or reception parameter for each application (54) in that unique application set for transmitting or receiving information associated with that application (54) over the communication channel (18);select, in response to a change in a set of currently active applications (54), a second application profile (34, 50) of the plurality of application profiles (34, 50), wherein the second application profile (34, 50) corresponds to the changed set of currently active applications (54);and transition to transmit or receive information according to the second application profile (34, 50), without interrupting communication between the transceiver (10, 14) and another transceiver (10, 14).
  6. 16
Transceiver according to any one of the claims 10 to 15, characterized in that the transceiver (10, 14) is further configured to do one or more of transmit at least one of the application profiles (34, 50) to the other transceiver (10, 14) over the communication channel (18) without performing a full initialization of the transceivers (10, 14);perform a full initialization of the transceivers (10, 14) to exchange one of the application profiles (34, 50) with the other transceiver (10, 14);and generate one of the application profiles (34, 50) upon an initial occurrence of a unique set of active applications, and associate the generated application profile (34, 50) with that unique application set.
  7. 17
Transceiver according to any one of the claims 10 to 16, characterized either in that the transceiver (10, 14) is configured to locally generate at least one of the transmission parameters for one of the application profiles (34, 50);or the transceiver (10, 14) is preconfigured with the application profiles (34, 50).
  8. 18
Transceiver according to any one of the claims 10 to 17, characterized in either:that the at least one transmission or reception parameter specified for each application (54) in one of the application profiles (34, 50) is at least one of a transmission or reception data rate, subchannels allocated for downstream and upstream transmission, a number of bits allocated to each of the subchannels, performance margin, fine gain adjustments for each of the subchannels, interleave depth, a minimum and a maximum QAM constellation size, a length of a cyclic prefix, a codeword size, a framing mode, and trellis code, or that the first stored application profile (34, 50) characterizes a transmission or reception of signals associated with a web browsing application, wherein the second stored application profile (34, 50) characterizes concurrent transmission or reception of signals associated with a voice telephony application and the Web browsing application.
