  1. 1
A method comprising the steps of:providing a plurality of tabs (211a) to a first transfer position, the tabs traveling in a first tab path;providing a web (10) for receiving said tabs, said web traveling in a web path, the web path being skew to the tab path at the first transfer position;and coupling said tabs to said web by urging a first tab applicator (220) comprising at least first and second bump transfer surfaces (221, 225) against said web to urge said web into contact with a single tab at said first transfer position, wherein: the first bump transfer surface (221) of said first tab applicator is provided with a counterweight (222) and in conjunction with said counterweight rotates about an axis (223) at a peripheral velocity approximately equal to a linear velocity of said web, the second bump transfer surface (225) of said first tab applicator is provided with a counterweight (226) and in conjunction with said counterweight rotates about a different axis (227) to the first bump transfer surface at a peripheral velocity approximately equal to a linear velocity of said web, and said first tab applicator provides a plurality of spaced apart attachment sites between each tab and said web to improve adhesion between each tab and said web.
  2. 10
An apparatus (209) comprising:a first tab supply assembly (210) adapted to receive a first tab web (211) and present a series of discrete tabs (211a) along a tab path to a first transfer position;a continuous web (10) traveling in a web path, said web path spaced a distance from said first tab supply assembly and skew to said tab path at said first transfer position;and a first tab applicator (220) comprising at least first and second bump transfer surfaces (221, 225) to alter said web path at said first transfer position at a predetermined time to decrease said distance between said web and said first tab supply assembly, thereby bringing said web into contact with a tab from said first tab supply assembly at multiple points, wherein: the first bump transfer surface (221) of said first tab applicator is provided with a counterweight (222) and in conjunction with said counterweight is rotatable about an axis (223) at a peripheral velocity approximately equal to a linear velocity of said web, the second bump transfer surface (225) of said first tab applicator is provided with a counterweight (226) and in conjunction with said counterweight is rotatable about a different axis (227) to the first bump transfer surface at a peripheral velocity approximately equal to a linear velocity of said web, and said first tab applicator is configured to provide a plurality of spaced apart attachment sites between each tab and said web to improve adhesion between each tab and said web.
